CAMDEN — Recognizing student achievements in and out of the classroom has become an important part of monthly board of education meetings throughout the county.

Last week, Preble Shawnee’s Board of Education honored several student-athletes for their success during the winter sports season.

“This has got to be a record for us. A lot of great things happened in the winter athletic season,” Preble Shawnee Superintendent Matt Bishop said during a regular BOE meeting on Thursday, March 11. “So we’re recognizing some Spirit Day champions, some SWBL First-Team all-league [selections]. So we’re really excited.”

Brayden Doran was recognized for winning the 138-pound weight class at the Southwestern Buckeye League wrestling tournament.

Liv Thompson was a first-team All-SWBL [Buckeye Division] and District 15 Underclass All-Star.

Campbell Jewell was honored for being named first-team SWBL and District 15 Underclass All-Star.

Bryce Singleton was honored for earning first-team SWBL, District 15 All-Star, and reaching 1,000 career points and having more than 500 career rebounds.

Mason Shrout was recognized for being named SWBL Buckeye Division Player of the Year, District 15 Underclassman of the Year and setting several individual season records.

The boys basketball team was honored for winning 20 games and SWBL Buckeye Division title in the school’s last year in the league.

Head coach Dale Spitler Jr. was named SWBL and District 15 Coach of the Year.

Assistant coach Dale Spitler Sr. was District 15 Assistant Coach of the Year.

“Anytime you get 20 wins in a boys basketball or girls basketball season that’s a major accomplishment. It was really fun to watch. A lot of us had to watch remotely on the the streaming service but certainly not the same,” Bishop said. “It was nice to see everybody competing.”

The junior high cheerleading squad earned first place at the SWBL competition as well as placing first in the cheer division and Gametime/Chant division at Spirit Day.

The varsity cheer team won first place in the Gametime/Chant division at Spirit Day.

“Both varsity and junior high had great seasons,” Bishop said. “We’re blessed here at Preble Shawnee to have lot of great coaches that mentor our young people, and work really hard with them, really get good results.

The Senior Boys dance routine tied for first at Spirit Day.

“This may seem unorthodoxed in other counties but not in Preble County. The Senior boys dance is something that (we) look forward to,” Bishop said. I will say that, I’ve been in the county for a long time to, and was at Spirit Days in the early 2000s and I’ve seen the boys dance evolve from something that was very fun and wild to something that the kids actually take pretty serious. And I think that the routine that our guys had, it was as close to competitive cheer performances I’ve seen. I think that honors the cheerleaders and I really appreciate that for them from a parent perspective.”
