Writer: ‘getting right with God’ best hope

There has been a lot of talk recently about racism in America. It is interesting how far we have come from the ideals set forth by our Founding Fathers. They were not perfect, not as individuals and certainly not as a new nation. But they did understand who our Creator was. They declared, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are our endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.” That is true.

It was God’s design from the beginning. But often, even people with similar beliefs don’t get everything right. That is why we need to communicate and at times be able to compromise. Our Founding Fathers had to deal with many issues of that time and there was a lot to resolve. Because they were not perfect, they were back at it again a few years later. This time they were proposing a new way of governing under a Constitution. The Preamble to Our Constitution states as our first goal, “in order to form a more perfect union.” No union is perfect. We are made up of people too individually different, but we were created equal and we should always strive to do better. In the beginning, God said “let us make man in our image and in our likeness” (Genesis 1:26). “So God created man in his image, in the image of God he created him; male and female. God blessed them and said to them, Be fruitful, and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it” (Genesis 1:27-28). Genesis 1:31 then says, “God saw all that he had made; and it was very good.”

Growing up as children we would sing in Sunday School and VBS: “Red and Yellow, Black and White. They are precious in his sight. Jesus loves the little children of the world.” That is what God and Christianity teaches. Unfortunately, there are many things that are taught that are not practiced. However, that should be our goal. In Revelation, the apostle John in his glimpse of heaven records, “And they sang a new song: “You are worthy…. Because with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth” (Revelation 5:9-10). God had a plan from the beginning.

Despite how man continues to mess it up, that plan still exists. Our best hope is to get right with God and get on board with his plan. He has provided both the plan and the way. We all matter to God and that is why he sent His Son.
