Eagles seeking SWBL title

EATON —The Eaton Eagles volleyball team defeated Valley View and Monroe last week and it continues to battle for a league championship.

The Eagles continued to apply pressure to undefeated Bellbrook when they defeated Valley View in straight sets on Tuesday, Sept. 22.

The Eagles beat the Spartans 25-13, 25-17 and 25-20. Jackie McCafferty led the way with 17 digs and three aces. Emma McKinney added 31 assists on 75 points and Brittany George finished with 14 kills and 10 digs.

On Thursday, Sept. 24, the team had perhaps its most exciting match of the season as the Eagles came back to defeat Monroe in five sets.

Monroe jumped out to an early lead, winning the first two sets 25-23, seemingly putting the Eagles on the ropes in both the match and their hunt for a league title.

Eaton battled back in the third set, however, winning 25-14. Monroe nearly ended all hopes of a title for the Eagles in the fourth set, but the talented team came out victorious, 33-31, before finishing off the comeback in the fifth and final set, winning 15-9.

Head coach Parker Fields said he was happy to see his team challenged heading into the final part of the season.“The way we won that match coming back from two down, on the road, really showed what type of fight we have,” he said. “We needed to be tested, and we needed to overcome some adversity.”

McKinney had a staggering 47 assists in the match while McCafferty added 21 digs. Puckett added 14 kills and three blocks with Allison Collins adding 11 kills, 11 digs and five aces. Julia Titus chipped in 13 kills and 10 digs and Brittany George led the way in kills with 18.

The win puts Eaton at 12-1 overall and 6-1 in the SWBL. Bellbrook is now 7-0.

The Eagles travel to Oakwood on Tuesday, Sept. 29, then hosts Brookville on Thursday, Oct 1, in two important league matches. The team then hosts Greenville on Saturday, Oct 3, for a Volley for the Cure event.

They also host state-ranked Middletown Fenwick on Monday, Oct. 5, in a non-league match.
