CAMDEN — The Preble Shawnee Board of Education moved its December meeting to the high school auditorium in order to recognize the varsity football team for its accomplishments this year.

During the meeting on Thursday, Dec. 7, Superintendent Matt Bishop gave every team member a copy of a resolution and a certificate recognizing their 8-2 record.

At the November meeting, the board passed that resolution to recognize the varsity team for having an 8-2 season.

“As I spoke at the last meeting, it was certainly very a difficult and tough issue that we dealt with,” Bishop said. “On behalf of the administration and the board, there is nothing we can say that can correct what happened or make it better, but we can apologize. We felt horribly about it.

“The kids and the coaching staff did everything right. They did everything they were supposed to do. It came down to an error made by a school official, but it does not take away from what was done on the field. We felt very strongly that the on the field 8-2 record is more than any Preble Shawnee team has done in history.

“What is in a book in Columbus is one thing, but we are recognizing an 8-2 season in our district.”

In addition to recognizing the entire football team, Luke Lovely was singled out for breaking the school record for career tackles and being named Second Team All-State Division V linebackers. Head Coach Matt Hopkins was recognized for being declared Coach of the Year in the Buckeye Division by the Southwestern Buckeye League.

The Preble Shawnee Board of Education also took an opportunity to recognize Saylor Jewell making the new school record of 81 goals for career in varsity soccer. She was also selected All-State Division III.
