Glenwood ‘work-group’ plans made, more testing to be done by the county


EATON — The Preble County Commissioners began the process of creating a “Glenwood Workgroup” in response to water issues the area is experiencing during a regular board meeting on Wednesday, June 24.

The work group will be put together in an attempt to find the best available solution for the water system in the Glenwood area, after contamination was found by the EPA.

Commissioners, along with Sanitary Engineer Randy Gilbert and members from the Preble County Health Department, are looking to create a well-rounded committee to help address problems in the Glenwood area — a committee which they hope includes local residents who have experience in contracting and construction in order to provide input from people with knowledge of the Glenwood area.

Preble County will conduct its own round of testing in the area, not in attempt to dispute the EPA findings, but to justify the location of the sewer system that is expected to go in according to commissioners. The testing being conducted by the county will attempt to identify areas not contributing to the contamination.

Areas to be tested include Quaker Trace Road, Quinn Road, Vanessa Drive, Rebecca Drive, Stover Road, Circle Drive, Sample Lane, and Woodside drive along with residences on U.S 35 between Stover Road and Woodside Drive.

During the meeting commissioners also received the monthly financial report from Preble County Auditor Lavon Wright.

According to Wright, revenues for the month were $618,649.23, a number which was 11.25 percent below the estimate. Sales tax revenues were $460,735.90. The rest of the revenue came from the local government fund ($42,056.26), charges for services ($67,055.95), interest ($11,078.85), fines and forfeitures, ($4,506.25) and other receipts ($33,216.02).

Expenditures for the month were $809,977.38, which was 9.54 percent below the estimated total for the month. Salaries, P.E.R.S and Medicare disbursements were $392,573.07. Health insurance premiums were billed and paid in the amount of $75,952.74.

Transfers for the month included $2,400 to the Preble County Agriculture Society, $32,000 for Children Services, and $11,089,00 to Victim Witness.

Department expenditures were $295.962.57, which includes supplies, equipment, charges for services, gasoline and travel.

According to Wright, the general fund began 2015 with a balance of $3,720,515.66 and ended May with $3,810,726.95.

Commissioners also discussed having the fair board prepare for the next round of grant applications. Commissioners said they would like to see the fair board have detailed plans and cost estimates by Oct. 1 for the proposed Expo Building additions and repairs to the electrical systems at the fairgrounds.

Commissioner Rodney Creech informed his fellow commissioners that during a recent trip to the Landfill, the EPA was present at the same time he was. An EPA rep advised him they were encouraged by the improvements being made at the landfill.

Commissioners approved a motion to begin work on renovations for the ticket booth at the fairgrounds at a cost not to exceed $10,000.

The commissioners also approved an expenditure at the landfill for leachate pump repairs for $7,000, and approved an agreement with Becker Blacktop for $24,330 for work being done at the courthouse.

County Commissioners meet every Monday and Wednesday, at 9 a.m., and are open to the public.
