CAMDEN — Eaton and Preble Shawnee boys soccer faced off in a physical match-up on Thursday, Aug. 27, with the Eagles scoring their first victory of the season, upending the Arrows 2-0.
Eaton controlled the ball most of the game, getting 29 shots on Shawnee goalie Alec Hacker – 19 of those shots occurring in the first half. On the other end, the Arrows only managed four shots on Eaton’s goal during the whole game.
“There still has to be some improvements against bigger teams but we played well. We dominated them,” said Eaton head coach Matt Money. “Shawnee was tired in the second half so that just kind of shows that we are fit and perhaps some of our opponents aren’t. Things that we forced against Shawnee told us that ‘We have to do this to stop Eaton’ and that’s kind of cool. We’re playing halfway decent.”
Eaton’s goals came from Daniel Howard at around the 25-minute mark and from James Howard at around the 35-minute mark of the first half.
“Eaton passed, communicated and moved on and off the ball well the whole game. My boys just didn’t play well; they were not communicating or passing the ball like they should have been,” said Shawnee head coach Mason Kuykendoll. “I’m not upset with a 2-0 loss for our first game of the season. We have come a long way already since the preseason tournament that we played in.”
Hacker finished with 27 saves for Shawnee. Three of the team’s four shots on goal came from Luke Feck with Cody Clevenger putting the fourth shot on target.
Eaton also kicked off their season with a 3-2 loss against Edgewood.
Both teams begin league play this week as Eaton was scheduled to take on Franklin on Tuesday, Sept. 1 before hosting Bellbrook on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 7:15 p.m.
Shawnee was scheduled to host Madison on Tuesday, Sept. 1 and will travel to Milton-Union for a 6 p.m. game on Thursday, Sept. 3. They also travel to Cincinnati Christian on Saturday, Sept. 5, for a 1 p.m. contest.
