Healing Art exhibit returns to McCullough-Hyde Hospital

OXFORD — The McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital Trust will hold the formal opening reception for its 6th annual Healing Art Exhibit on Friday evening, April 22, from 5:30–7:30 p.m.

The public is invited to view the newest exhibit, which features 55 original works of art, chosen by professional artist jurors. Artwork is displayed throughout the hospital to enhance the healing environment for patients, families and visitors.

“The feedback we receive from staff, patients and their families about the annual Healing Art Exhibit is highly positive. The annual addition of this wonderful regional artwork to the hospital walls enhances the healing environment, and that is making a difference in patients’ lives and their healing,” said hospital Interim Executive Director Pamela Collins.

The exhibit is a partnership between the hospital and regional artists from a 100-mile radius of Oxford, who submitted their works of art themed around “healing.” Jurors Tom Hogeback and Fred Russell selected a range of 55 pieces for the exhibit, representing a variety of media, styles and sizes. Both are photographers whose works have appeared in many juried exhibits.

From the art work juried into the exhibit, the hospital chose thirteen Purchase Awards, totaling $7,000 in value, which were underwritten with funds from the Robert E. White Endowment, the Hospital Auxiliary and the Hospital Medical Staff.

The Purchase Awards will hang as part of the exhibit for one year, and then be added to the hospital’s permanent collection when the exhibit is renewed next spring. All remaining pieces are available for purchase by the public during the next 12 months.

Chief Development Officer Mary Bennett recognized the original donors who support the exhibit; “The Joe and Kate Wespiser Healing Arts Endowment was established by the Wespisers to help underwrite the annual exhibit, and their support enables us to reach out farther to more professional artists to bring more talent and diversity into the exhibit.” Bennett also recognized the participation of several volunteers who help to coordinate the event. “We are very appreciative of the people who give of their time to assist us in planning for this very special occasion.”

An Exhibit Opening Reception for the public and the artists is on Friday evening, April 22, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the hospital. The reception will also feature music and is open to the public. Visitors will be able to meet the artists, view the exhibit at their leisure, and experience their own version of healing. The exhibit will be on view through March 2017.
