What are you up to Judy and Janet?

Surviving! Christmas is just not the same. We know that we are showing our ages but as a child, we looked forward to Christmas. Baking cookies, making candy to share with our neighbors, sending Christmas cards to connect us to family and friends (not on a phone held in my hands but through thoughts written in a card letting them know how much they are missed and loved). Where has Christmas caroling gone? Fruit baskets have also disappeared.

A parent was observed crying with her head in her hands saying, “I don’t know what to get them. They have all the technology that is sold!” We have backed ourselves into the corner.

Clothes are still an option. Board games are great because some of us have forgotten sharing, taking turns, enjoying time laughing and talking to each other.

Luckily, the Spirit of Christmas has not totally disappeared. We had the privilege of meeting a young man recently at Trinity Lutheran Church. His name is Lane Kerby, a thirteen-year old eighth grade student at Tri County North. Lane raises turkeys as his 4-H project. He gets his birds when they are one week old and said it takes about one year to raise them. This year he raised a 33 pound turkey named Kevin that he donated to Trinity Lutheran to be served at a future Neighbor Night. When asked what prompted him to make the donation, he said he just wants to pay it forward. When Lane’s not with his turkeys, he enjoys playing soccer. He hopes to become a veterinarian after attending either Purdue or Tennessee. Lane’s proud parents are Jason and Carrie Kerby.

Remember the reason for the season. A baby was born to take our pain. What a great gift for all mankind.

Final thought

Words of Wisdom: Live your life! Take chances. Be crazy. Don’t wait. Because right now is the oldest you’ve ever been and the youngest you’ll be … ever again.

Until next week, enjoy the little things in life. Tell someone you love them. There is Spirit, there is Grace in our peaceful country place. See you around the ‘Burg. Happy New Year!
