Trail girls, North boys pick up pair of wins

PREBLE COUNTY – Eaton’s boys’ basketball team cut a 16-point deficit to six late in the fourth quarter, but came up short at Monroe on Friday, Jan. 21, 61-47.

The Eagles got off to a slow start, falling behind 22-10 after the first quarter and trailing 35-19 at the half.

Eaton coach Sean Sims said his team had its chances late in the fourth to pull out the win, but Monroe was able to make plays down the stretch.

The Eagles (7-8) still lead the Southwestern Buckeye League West Division with a 4-4 mark despite the loss.

The loss also snapped a four-game winning streak for the Eagles.

Eaton was led by sophomore guard Ramy Ahmed with 15 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Junior Carson Janney added seven points and four assists and sophomore Chris Atkins chipped in with seven points.

Eaton was scheduled to play at Valley View on Tuesday, Jan. 25 and will visit Preble Shawnee on Saturday, Jan. 29.

Panthers snap skid with pair of wins

LEWISBURG — Tri-County North’s boys basketball team picked up its first win since Dec. 11, 2021, snapping a nine-game losing streak with a 65-52 win over Mississinawa Valley on Friday, Jan. 21.

North made it two wins in a row with a 59-58 win over Emmanuel Christian on Saturday.

The Panthers opened the week with a 55-46 overtime loss at New Miami on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Against MV, Logan Flory scored a team-high 22 points, with nine coming in the first quarter.

Jon Shirley tossed in 16 and Luke Eby contributed 15 points.

North led 19-18 after the first quarter and was up 33-27 at the half. The Panthers pulled away late, outscoring the Blackhawks 17-10 in the fourth quarter.

Against Emmanuel Christian, North led by 20 points at the half, but had to rally for the win as Shirley hit two late free throws to secure the win.

North led 7-5 after one and was up 32-12 at the half. EC outscored North 20-9 in the third and 26-18 in the fourth.

Shirley finished the night with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Flory added 15 points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists.

Against New Miami, the Panther rallied from five down to begin the fourth to force overtime. In the OT, North was outscored 11-2.

Flory led the Panthers with 16 points and seven rebounds. Eby turned in a solid performance with 14 points, five rebounds and three steals, and Brett Woodyard contributed eight points, seven rebounds and three assists.

North (4-12, 1-7 WOAC) is scheduled to host Arcanum on Friday, Jan. 28 and Covington on Saturday.

Trail seeking first win of 2022

NEW PARIS — National Trail’s boys basketball team suffered two more losses this week, falling 55-42 to Ansonia on Friday, Jan. 21 and 54-46 at Valley View on Saturday.

Against Ansonia, Trail led 25-21 at the half, but was outscored 34-19 in the second half.

Senior Wyatt House led the Blazers with 24 points. Ethan Murphy added 10 points, four assists and three rebounds.

Trail (2-16, 0-8 WOAC) is scheduled to play at Newton on Friday, Jan. 28 and at The Miami Valley School on Saturday.

Trail girls improve to 10-6 with pair of wins

National Trail’s girls turned in a solid defensive performance Tuesday, Jan. 18, holding Carlisle without a field goal in the first half of a 39-21 win. The defense was stifling enough to allow the Blazers to pull away early and maintain the advantage despite a subpar 5 for 17 effort at the free throw line. Trail’s scoring was paced by Micaiah Byrd’s 19 points. J’da Jackson had 8 points to go along with her 17 rebounds, and Skyler Ward chipped in with seven points.

Skyler Ward scored 15 of her 23 points during a 21-1 second quarter run as National Trail ran away from Ansonia Thursday evening, 52-29. Nine different Blazers in all scored, led by Ward’s 23, Micaiah Byrd with 8, and Rylee Minner and J’da Jackson with 6 each.

Trail is 10-6 overall and 5-4 in the WOAC. The Blazers are scheduled to host Brookville on Monday and will host Newton on Thursday.

North girls drop pair

LEWISBURG — Tri-County North suffered a pair of losses last week to fall below the .500 mark.

The Panthers lost to Brookville 46-19 Tuesday, Jan. 18. Nicole Lefeld led North with eight points and six rebounds. Rilee Terry added seven points, seven rebounds and seven blocked shots.

On Thursday, North dropped a 63-37 contest to Mississinawa Valley.

Terry led the Panthers with 11 points and 16 rebounds. Mackenzie Bacher and Nani Garcia each added seven points.

North (8-10, 2-7 WOAC), was scheduled to host Twin Valley South on Tuesday, Jan. 25 and will visit Arcanum on Thursday. They will close out the week with a trip to Middletown Christian on Saturday.

South falls to 3-14

WEST ALEXANDRIA —Twin Valley South’s girls basketball team dropped two games last week to fall to 3-14 overall and 0-9 in the WOAC.

South lost to Union County (Ind.) 50-36 on Tuesday, Jan. 18 and lost to Dixie 60-32 on Thursday.

Jordan Ritchie led the Panthers with 14 points and three rebounds against Union County, while Clara Meyers added six points.

Against Dixie, Ritchie led the way with seven points. Brionna Abner added six points and 11 rebound and Maci Arndts contributed six points, five rebounds and three steals.

The Panthers were scheduled to play at Dayton Christian on Monday, Jan. 24 and at Tri-County North on Tuesday. They will close out the week with a trip to Tri-Village on Thursday, Jan. 27.
