Trail downs Dixie, 71-0

NEW LEBANON — National Trail’s football team ran its winning streak to four after an impressive 71-0 win over host Dixie on Thursday, Sept. 15.

The Blazers scored 42 points in the first quarter as they improved to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the Western Ohio Athletic Conference.

All 30 active players on the roster played throughout the game as many of the reserve players got their first significant time in a varsity game as the game was played with a running clock in the second half, including play a six-minute fourth quarter.

The defense pitched a shutout holding the Greyhounds to 65 total yards on the night.

Evan Baker had an interception while three fumbles were caused by Drew DeWitt, Logan Smith and Josh Welz and recovered by Brodie Strawser, James Baker and Zach Lawson.

The defensive group had nine tackles for loss and Phoenix Lewis led the defense with nine tackles.

The offensive stat line was impressive as the Trail scored nine touchdowns, racking up 309 yards on only 19 plays, averaging 16.3 yards per rush.

Cayden Clark scored three TDs, including a 65-yard KO return after a Dixie safety.

Jody Wintrow scored his first varsity TD in the second quarter and hit pay-dirt again in the quarter.

Drew DeWitt had 105 yards rushing on 3 carries that included two scores on runs of 35 and 60 yards.

Chase Ruebush, Jamison Watts and Zack Creager rounded out the scoring with solo TD runs. DeWitt was a perfect 9 for 9 on this PAT attempts.

Trail returns to WOAC play this Friday (Sept. 23) as they host Arcanum (2-3, 2-2 WOAC).

The Trojans beat Tri-County North 14-6 last Friday.
