NEW MADISON — Preble Shawnee’s girls basketball team ran into a hot-shooting Tri-Village team when the two hooked for to battle for the Western Ohio Athletic Conference championship last week.

Shawnee fell behind 16-0 within the first six minutes of the game and never recovered in suffering a 71-36 setback.

With the loss, Shawnee fell to 16-6 overall and 10-1 in the WOAC.

Tri-Village, ranked No. 1 in Ohio in Division IV, finished league play 11-0.

The Patriots shot 68 percent in the first half while jumping out to a 23-7 lead after the first quarter and 46-23 at the half.

For the game, T-V shot 60 percent.

“Obviously, they were shooting lights out and we couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn,” Shawnee coach Maggie Neanen said. “I feel like once we made our first one, it kind of relaxed us. Unfortunately, we were down 16 by that point, but you have to tip your hat to a team that shoots 60 percent for the game.”

Neanen said she told her team not to dwell on this loss, but use it as learning point for the upcoming postseason.

“Keep our heads up,” she said her message was to the team in the locker room after the game. “We finished one place better than last year; we won one more game than last year in the regular season. We lost two league games last year, and we lost one this year. We set the goal October 21 that we wanted to play for a league championship and we did. Now we just got to use it. That prepared us to go win a district championship.”

Senior Liv Thompson lead the Arrows with 19 points.

The Arrows will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 11 when the meet Northwestern in the first round of the Division III sectional tournament at 12:30 p.m. at Covington High School.
