Brookville to host annual bicycle event

BROOKVILLE — Park board gave its permission to allow a Dayton bicycle club to use the large room in the Lieber Center in Golden Gate Park at a reduced fee for its annual May cycling event.

The park board also gave its permission to allow the club to use Golden Gate Park.

Park board president Adam Blevins, reading the report from city manager Sonja Keaton, said the Dayton Cycling Club wants to use the center for its annual Huffman Spring Classic scheduled May 21 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Golden Gate Park.

“The club would like to utilize the Christina Lieber Center as their check-in location for the start of the ride,” Blevins read from Keaton’s report.

“They also plan to use the Lieber Center to serve box lunches catered by Rob’s Restaurant (in Brookville) to the riders as they return,” Blevins read from the report.

Blevins said Keaton advises the club is asking to reserve the large side of the center for a discounted fee of $50.

Blevins said Keaton noted the club has received the discounted fee in past years.

“The last time the club used the Lieber Center and received the discounted fee was in 2019,” Blevins stated from Keaton’s report.

Blevins said Keaton pointed out the event was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“What is the regular charge?” park board member Loren Wilson asked.

“It is $165 to rent the center for Brookville residents and $175 for non-residents,” Brookville Clerk of Council Kim Duncan replied.

Blevins said he is in favor of the request.

“It’s great thing they do and it’s a traditional thing. We probably want to continue to allow them to use the park and the Lieber Center,” Blevins said.

Park board member Carolyn Haney said she thinks allowing the club to use the park is a good idea.

“It will bring people into the park,” Haney said.

Keaton’s report stated riders will ride through the park onto the Wolf Creek Pike trail and then ride out of Brookville on the trail.

“The riders will return to Brookville using that same route. They will be spread out over several hours starting at 7 a.m.,” Blevins read from Keaton’s report.

According to the DCC website, the event is open to DDC members and non-members.

Early online registration is $25 for DDC members and $35 for non-members.

Early registration closes Thursday, May 18.

The cost to register on the day of the event is $40. Accepted payment is cash or personal check.

Bike routes are primarily on scenic low traffic roads in western Montgomery, southern Darke and eastern Preble counties.

Routes also include a few miles on the paved Wolf Creek bike trail.

A map of the routes are available. Riders will also be able to ride the GPS routes.

Routes will be marked with DCC’s easy-to-follow white arrows.

Routes range from 32 to 100 miles. Snack stops will be available in about 15-18-mile intervals.

An optional late-start for shorter distance riders who don’t want to start early in the morning is available.

Riders choosing this option may begin anytime between 7 a.m. and noon.
