A LOOK AT BROOKVILLE: Community Library

BROOKVILLE — Crowning 50 years of cooperative endeavor, a new Brookville Community Library was moved to 19 Wolf Creek Street in August 1970.

Mrs. Paul Wogoman, who had been with the library since 1963 was the Community Librarian. Library Assistants were Mrs. Harold Lentz and Mrs. Robert Dodt, Joyce Parker, Debra Clemmer and Donna Landis served as pages.

Construction had started on the enlarging and the remodeling of the building in April 1970. The construction consisted of expanding a room to the front of the structure and the moving of interior walls. When the work was completed, the library had approximately 2200 sq. ft. of floor space compared to the 880 sq. ft. from its previous location in the Municipal Building.

The Dayton Public Library assisted in the move by sending out workers to help. The Brookville staff did the packing. The new library housed 15,000 books for adults and children. The library offered information service, reading guidance and story hours.

An open house for the public was held on Friday evening, August 21. Clio Club members and staff served as hostesses. The library opened for business on Saturday, August 22 during the hours of 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Other hours were Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 1:30 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday 1:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Brookville’s Library had its origin as a subscription library established by the Clio Club in 1917 and subsequently it was opened to the public. It was nurtured by the Clio Club, the Brookville Rotary Club, town officials and from 1936 on by the Dayton and Montgomery County Public Library.
