Eaton baseball, softball still near top of SWBL

EATON — Eaton’s baseball and softball teams played key league games last week in their bids to stay near the top of the Southwestern Buckeye League standings.

Despite dropping two of three games last week, the baseball team remains tied with Carlisle for the top spot with a 6-3 mark in the SWBL West. Carlisle, who beat the Eagles, 6-5, on Wednesday, April 26, is 4-2.

Eaton has four league games left over the final two weeks of the regular season while the Indians have seven. The two are scheduled to meet one more time this season. The two teams were scheduled to play last Friday but the game was rained out. No makeup date had been announced as of press time.

Eaton also dropped a 2-0 decision at Waynesville on Monday, April 24 and they beat Middletown Madison, 3-1, on Tuesday, April 25.

Against Carlisle, Eaton held leads of 4-1 after two innings and 5-2 after four.

The Indians tallied three in the fifth to tie the game and scored the eventual winning run in the sixth. All four of those runs scored with two outs in each inning.

Ty Crammer was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Dillon Jerdon added two hits and drove in two runs.

Against Waynesville, the Eagles were held to just two hits, a single by Lucas Abner and a double by Brock Ebright, in the loss.

The Spartans scored both of their runs in the third.

Against Madison, Eaton made the most of its five hits.

Each team scored a run in the first. Eaton added single runs in the fourth and sixth to get the win.

Brady Rice was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Reid Tinstman and JT Gels each added a hit and drove in a run.

Eaton (9-7) was scheduled to play Oakwood on Monday, May 1. They are to host Monroe on Wednesday, May 3 and Tri-County North on Friday, May 5.

The softball team went 1-1 last week but saw their hopes of a first league title take a major hit with a 12-2 loss to league-leader and state-ranked Carlisle on Wednesday.

The loss dropped Eaton to 6-3 in the SWBL, while the Indians improved to 7-0.

Eaton opened the week with a 16-6 run-rule win at Waynesville.

Against Carlisle, Eaton fell behind 1-0 after one. They trailed 5-0 after two, 9-2 after three and 12-2 after four.

Hannah Redick doubled and drove in both runs.

Against Waynesville, the Eagles scored early and often. They tallied five runs in the first, four in the second and three more in the third for a 12-0 lead.

Redick had big day. She went 5-for-5 with two home runs, six RBI and scored four times.

Olivia Baumann went 3-for-4 with a double, triple, three RBI and four runs scored. Gracie Copper had two hits and drove in a run. Kendall Miller doubled and had two RBI. Julie Schrimper had a pair of doubles and drove in three runs.

Eaton (8-7) was scheduled to host Oakwood on Monday and Valley View on Tuesday. The Eagles are to host Monroe on Wednesday and travel to Northmont on Thursday and Ansonia on Friday, before closing out the week hosting National Trail on Saturday.
