DAYTON — Air show officials announced last week the return of the U.S. Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet Legacy Flight as well as aircraft static displays for air show spectators to get up close and personal with at the 2023 CenterPoint Energy Dayton Air Show presented by Kroger on Saturday and Sunday, July 22 and 23 at the Dayton International Airport.

The Navy’s premier strike fighter will be joined by the iconic WWII and Korean War-era Corsair for a moving matchup as the two fly in formation. The Corsair is known for its distinctive “gull wing” and large propeller with a 2,100 HP Pratt-Whitney radial engine making the aircraft a favorite among aviators.

The F/A-18 is powered by two GE turbofan afterburning engines with a top speed of Mach 1.8 (1,190 MPH), compared to the Corsair’s 389 MPH. The AU-1 Corsair will be flown by West Virginia-native Scott “Scooter” Yoak, an airshow pilot, aircraft restoration mechanic and museum curator.

In addition to the Corsair, he flies a P-51 and performs in 20-25 airshows each year. The F/A-18 Super Hornet and AU-1 Corsair will appear together in the iconic Legacy Flight as part of the 2023 CenterPoint Energy Dayton Air Show lineup

“We are thrilled to be able to bring the Legacy Flight back to Dayton spectators to honor our nation’s history of aviation and the sacrifices of those who have flown in defense of our country,” said Scott Buchanan, Chairman of the United States Air & Trade Show Board of Trustees, producers of the show. “From the explosive performances by our Firewalkers and Jet Fire Truck and the thrilling Red Bull performances to the legacy acts, this year’s show has something for everyone.”

These performances will join the recently announced WWII B-25 Bomber and headliner, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds. Also appearing will be aerobatic performers Kevin Coleman, Bill Stein Airshows, Kirby Chambliss, and Redline Air Shows. The world’s fastest Aftershock Jet Fire Truck and the world-renowned Red Bull Air Force will also be at the 2023 show.
