CLAYTON — Former Northmont girls varsity soccer head coach Mike Jewsikow, 57, died unexpectedly Wednesday, July 26. He was a 1984 graduate of Northmont High School.

Jewsikow compiled a record of 185-36-20 during his career as coach of the Northmont girls soccer team from 1994 until 2000. Under his leadership, the Lady Bolts advanced to the regional tournament four times.

Northmont lost to Carroll 1-0 in the 1995 regional. In 1996 the Lady Bolts lost 2-0 to Westerville South in regional play. 1997 saw Northmont fall 1-0 to Thomas Worthington in the regional tournament and in 1998 lost 2-0 to Columbus Bishop Watterson.

Jewsikow was named assistant girls coach of the year in 1989, 1991, 1992 and 1993. He was named 1996 Coach of the Year in 1996 by the Miami Valley Soccer Coaches Association.

When Jewsikow stepped down as the girls soccer coach after the 2000 season, his longtime assistant Walt Slade took the head coach position. Slade and Jewsikow were former roommates and served as best man at each other’s weddings.

“The few times we would lose a game, Mike and I would stay up until well past midnight discussing what we did wrong, what we did right and how we could improve on the things we did do right,” Slade recalled.

After leaving the soccer program, Jewsikow joined the Northmont varsity football program as kicking coach. He also served as a baseball coach and boys soccer assistant coach under legendary former head coach George Demetriades.

He served as the boys soccer reserve B coach and reserve A coach before stepping over to the girls soccer program.

Jewsikow was also actively involved as a coach in the Wee Bolts football program.

“This past week, the Northmont family lost a great friend and former coach, Mike Jewsikow,” a statement on the Northmont Athletics web site stated. “Mike coached boys soccer, girls soccer, baseball, and football at Northmont. Mike was an avid supporter of everything Northmont, and also helped serve with the Wee Bolts football program. Mike was a friend to all who knew him and will be remembered for his loyal service to Northmont, and his uncanny ability to make those around him laugh.”

Jewsikow was currently working at Ideal Image in Englewood. He previously worked for the Greater Dayton Construction Group as insurance superintendent beginning in 1994. He joined GDCG with 20 years of residential building and remodeling experience.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Baker-Hazel & Snider Funeral Home, 5555 Philadelphia Dr., Dayton. His viewing takes place Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 3 at Shiloh Church, 5300 Philadelphia Dr. at N. Main St., Dayton.
