Kleptz YMCA blood drive tops its goal

ENGLEWOOD — Englewood donors braved a breezy fall day at the Oct. 16 Kleptz YMCA blood drive for the warm reward of free Bella Sorella wood-fired pizza, hot from the mobile oven.

The Corrado sisters Elizabeth Corrado Weizman and Gail Corrado Okafor are the “beautiful sisters” behind Bella Sorella Pizza.

They have made it a tradition to honor October Breast Cancer Awareness Month and their family’s personal battles with cancer, by supporting the October Solvita blood drive at the Kleptz.

“It’s never too cold for pizza!” said Clayton donor Lisa McCormick, a regular supporter of Englewood blood drives and a fan of Bella Sorella. She was among the donors who went from the Solvita Bloodmobile to the line for Neapolitan-style pizzas hot from the mobile brick oven.

The blood drive topped 115 percent of the collection goal with 28 donors. Donors also received the Solvita “Count on Me to Donate Blood to Help Fight Cancer” T-shirt.

The Kleptz blood drive is one of the final events of the season for Elizabeth and Gail and a commitment to the “Count on Me” cause. They lost their sister Kate to colon cancer in 2019 and Elizabeth has been battling plasma cell cancer multiple myeloma for more than three years.

She has benefitted from the breakthrough CART T-cell treatments for blood cancer she began a year ago, although was not well enough to be at the blood drive this year.

“I told my kids, ‘Both of your aunties have received blood transfusion,’” said Gail. “They save lives.”

“I was looking for a blood drive on Donor Time,” said Brookville donor Eliya Norman. “I found this one with pizza, so it was a double bonus!
