DMAX diesel engine business growing

BROOKVILLE — Rhonda McCoy addressed council on the services provided by the DMAX facility, located at 101 W. Campus Blvd.

DMAX was founded in 1999 as a joint venture with Isuzu Diesel Services of America, Inc.,

DMAX became a wholly owned subsidiary of General Motors in May of 2022.

McCoy noted there are two DMAX manufacturing plants in the Miami Valley.

McCoy noted the Moraine plant, located at 3100 Dryden Road, in Moraine, opened in 1999.

McCoy said the Brookville plant opened in 2021, where she is operations manager.

McCoy noted General Motors announced plans last June to expand the Brookville location with the addition of a 1.1 million square foot building next to the current 251,000 square foot facility.

McCoy indicated ground was recently broke for the new building.

McCoy said DMAX produces the L5P Duramax 6600 diesel engine.

McCoy pointed out the diesel engine consists of a cast aluminum cylinder head, a forged steel crankshaft and is a fully dressed engine.

Using a slide presentation, McCoy said the engine is popular because:

• it has an unique fuel injection system that results in the reduction of noise and emission levels.

• the engine’s rigid block design reduces engine noise.

• the engine is 445 horsepower at 3,000 rpm

• it has 910 foot-pounds of torque at 1,600 rpm, which results in greater power and increased payload.

McCoy said the Brookville facility operates concurrently with the Moraine plant.

She indicated the Brookville facility handles the machined engine components that are used in the engines.

“We machine it and ship it over to the Moraine site where the engine is built,” McCoy said.

McCoy said workers at the Moraine plant build the engines and then ships them to their customers.

McCoy noted the Brookville plant builds 418 blocks and 324 heads a day.

“We ship them down to the Moraine plant four times a day,” McCoy said.

McCoy said the Moraine plant builds 500 blocks and 1,440 heads a day.

McCoy also said the Moraine plant produces 855 crankshafts a day.

“We send 882 engines a day to our customers,” McCoy said.

But McCoy said the engines don’t leave the Moraine plant until they are thoroughly tested.

“Every engine that is built goes through the hot test so we can catch every problem before it goes out the door,” McCoy said.

McCoy said DMAX builds engines for the GMC Sierra and the Chevrolet Silverado pickup trucks that are built in Flint, Mich.

McCoy also said DMAX has a partnership with Gale Banks Engineering.

“We ship them a short block for the military’s JLTV (Joint Light Tactical Vehicle)” McCoy said.

McCoy said DMAX produces a short block for Marine diesel engine used in large commercial fishing boats.

McCoy also said DMAX produces engines for Navastar in Springfield where the engines are placed in medium duty trucks.

McCoy noted there are a total of 864 hourly employees at the two locations.

“There are 783 hourly employees and 147 salaried employees at the Moraine facility,” McCoy said.

“There are 81 hourly employees and 18 salaried employees at the Brookville location,” McCoy continued.

General Motors hopes to open the new Brookville plant in 2025.
