TVS honors 3 for academic success with HOF enshrinement

WEST ALEXANDRIA — Dr. Matthew Roberts, Dr. Steven Shafer, and Jason Woodard were inducted into the Twin Valley South Hall of Fame in recognition of their academic accomplishments.

In total, 11 new members were inducted into the West Alexandria/Lanier/Twin Valley South Hall of Fame on Friday, Jan. 19. Four for Athletic achievements, three for academic achievements, and four for community service.

The inductees range from the West Alexandria High class of 1946 to the TVS Class of 2012.

Roberts is a 1997 graduate of Twin Valley South. He was a member of the National Honor Society, SADD and DARE, played basketball, baseball, and football and earned five varsity letters.

Roberts went on to Wilmington College after graduating from TVS. At Wilmington he was a four-year Leader Honor Scholar recipient, a member of the Green Key Honor Society and was active in in Big Brothers and Leadership Council. He also played basketball for two years. He graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training and Sports Management and in 2001 he received his National Athletic Trainers Association certification.

In 2005, he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Doctor of Chiropractic and a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology from Logan College of Chiropractic. He received the Clinical Excellence Award, was active in the Motion Palpation Institute and taught Biomechanics and Adjusting Technique. He holds several professional memberships and certifications.

He has been a speaker at the Ohio State Athletic Trainers Annual Meeting, the Dayton Sports Medicine Institute Annual Symposium, Standard Process Nutrition Seminar, and the Preble County Honor Scholar Banquet. He has been the Team doctor for Bellbrook Junior High, Dayton Dutch Lions Professional Soccer and Twin Valley South High School. He is currently the team doctor for Eaton High School and is currently and has been for the past 14 years, the team chiropractor for the Dayton Dragons minor league baseball team.

Dr. Roberts is married to his high school sweetheart Elizabeth (Maggard) Roberts. They have been married for 21 years and have twin daughters, Eva, and Myla. He enjoys coaching the girls in soccer, spending time with family, fishing, working out and rooting on the Bengals, Buckeyes, and Reds, the presentation noted.

Dr. Shafer is a 1965 graduate of Twin Valley South, the very first graduating class of Twin Valley South. He was a member of the History and Science Clubs in high school. He received Superior ratings at the Preble County Science Fairs and Excellent at the District Science Fairs in 1964 and 1965. He also ran cross country in high school. He went on to the National College of Chiropractic in Lombard, Illinois where he graduated with his Doctor of Chiropractic degree in May 1970. While in college he was a member of the Student American Chiropractic Association and the Ohio Club. He was a member of the student council, and senior class treasurer and received the Chi Rho Sigma Professional Award and the Student Council Award.

Dr. Shafer enlisted in the United States Army Reserves in April 1970 and served two years. He was assigned as a medical technician to the 2291st USAR Medical Unit on Gettysburg Avenue in Dayton. He started his career with Dr. Don Shaffer in Trotwood in January of 1971, and opened his own office, Steve Shafer Chiropractic Practice in Eaton, in April of 1973. Besides the state of Ohio, he has passed his board exams and received Chiropractic licenses for states of Florida, Colorado, and Arizona, the presentation noted.

He is a member of many various organizations, including the American Chiropractic Association, Miami Valley Chiropractic Society, and the Ohio State Chiropractic Association (OSCA). He held the following positions in the OSCA: President of the Neurology Council in 1988, Chairman of the Scholarship Awards in 1991 and 1992.

Dr.Shafer retired from his chiropractic practice on March 18, 2022, after more the 50 years with service — in the Eaton and Preble County area for 48 years. He was a member of the Eaton/Preble County Chamber of Commerce and received the Chairman of the Board Award, the Dedicated Service Award, and the Distinguished Service award over the years.

Dr. Shafer is a member of the Eaton Methodist Church and has served on many committees. He was a Junior/Senior High Sunday School teacher for 20 years. He currently is still active in the health care business with a nutrition practice.

He has four adult children and five grandchildren, and he enjoys watching his grandchildren participate in various activities, according to the presentation.

Woodard was the final inductee of the evening. He is a 1993 graduate of Twin Valley South who graduated third in his class. He was the class vice president and a member of the National Honor Society, earned four varsity letters in baseball, two letters in basketball, two letters in football, and multiple letters in cross country and track.

Woodard went on to the University of Dayton where he played baseball for the Flyers. He is a 1997 graduate of the University of Dayton with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.

“Jason has a solid foundation of over 20 years of expertise in developing, leasing, and managing many renowned projects in the greater Dayton region involving multiple product types, usually melded together in a cohesive mixed-use environment,” the presentation noted. “His extensive development and real estate transactions have resulted in over two million square feet of development.”

Woodard started Woodard Development in 2012 and immediately began pursuit of what is now known as the Water Street District, a premier development in downtown Dayton, which includes downtown Dayton’s most successful office, multi-family, and hospitality projects including Altafiber HQ, The Avant-Garde, Water Street Flats, Delco Lofts, Centerfield Flats, The Monument, The Sutton, and both Fairfield Inn and Suites and AC Marriott hotel. The Water Street District is also home to numerous food and beverage concepts including Tender Mercy, a 2021 Esquire Best Bar in America designee.

In addition to Water Street, Woodard Development has been active in industrial acquisition and development, medical office development and extensive adaptive re-use projects.

Woodard is a past chair of Dayton NAIOP (National Association for Industrial and Office Parks) Chapter, NAIOP National Board of Director, Vice-Chair of Downtown Dayton Partnership, Dayton Development Coalition Board Member, Dayton Chamber of Commerce Board Member, and many other community-based leadership positions. He is married to his wife Lindsay and has three children, Alexa, Ella and Jake.
