CLAYTON — Third-seeded Preble Shawnee found itself in a battle during a boys Division III sectional final match up with upset minded Dayton Stivers.

The Tigers, the No. 17 seed, gave the Arrows all they could handle during the first 16 minutes, draining seven 3-pointers to stay within striking distance at halftime (39-33).

“It was a very tight game in the first half. I thought we did some good things on offense,” Shawnee coach Jake Turner said. “I thought we were scoring well, were sharing the ball taking care of the ball, too. That was huge. Defensively, they (Stivers) made some shots. They made a lot of shots.”

The Arrows though turned up the defensive pressure in the second half and shot 61 percent from the field for the game to pull away for a 72-47 win on Thursday, Feb. 22 at Northmont High School.

Shawnee (20-3) will now meet No. 13 seed Valley View, a 64-61 upset winner over No. 7 Anna, in the district semifinals Thursday, Feb. 29, also at Northmont.

Senior Mason Shrout led the way for Shawnee with 28 points, 22 in the first half, 13 rebounds and eight assists.

Senior Logan Hawley added 15 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and blocked four shots.

Sophomore Brody Morton tossed in 11 points and pulled down six rebounds.

Junior Brayden Robinette added seven points, five rebounds and five assists and junior Isaac Blankenship added six points and six assists.

After a Stivers three-pointer to begin the second half cut the Arrows lead to 39-36, Shawnee went on a 14-0 run to build a 53-36 lead late in the third quarter.

Shawnee’s lead never got below 13 after that.

“It was a great second half on both ends of the court,” Turner said.
