WILMINGTON — The season for Eaton’s boys wrestling team came to an end last weekend with a trio of Eagles competing in the Division II district tournament.
Senior Brayden Deem’s season ended with a loss in the consolation semifinals, leaving him one win shy of qualifying for the state tournament at 144-pounds.
Deem (40-10) opened the tournament with a pin of Nate Bunkowske of Cin. Indian Hill in 3 minutes, 3 seconds. Deem also won his quarterfinal match over Samuel Keyes of Oakwood by major decision, 16-6.
In the semis, he fell to Cael Gilmore of Marengo Highland by fall in 4:57. Deem’s season came to end with a 6-2 loss in the consolation semifinals to Luke Hanger of Watterson.
At 190, sophomore Presley Stewart finished his season one win from the state tournament. Stewart lost his first-round match then won three straight to reach the consolation semifinals.
In his opening round match, Stewart lost in overtime to James Hodge of Vandalia-Butler.
Stewart (42-9) won his first consolation match by pin in 40 seconds over Terry Bitzer of Goshen. In his second consolation match, Stewart pinned William Short of Watterson in 1:24. Stewart pinned his third-round opponent, Owen Jordan of Ben Logan in 3:22.
His season ended with a loss to Hodge by fall in 4:21.
At 157, Elijah Thacker went 1-2 at the district tournament. He lost his opening round match 11-4 to Hamde Bakeye of Whitehall-Yearling but bounced back to win his first consolation match by pin of New Richmond’s Eli Stark in 1:55.
Thacker (34-16) dropped in his second consolation match Malik Quiles of Cin. Hughes, 11-4.
Deem and Stewart are alternates for the state tournament, which is scheduled for March 8-10 at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus.
