Phillipsburg sets Easter party, garage sale

PHILLIPSBURG — Easter Bunny, please answer your phone.

At the March 19 council meeting, Mayor Shawna Newsom announced the village Easter party would take place from 1 through 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 30, at the Hunt Club, 201 Milan Rd. But she added she still had to contact the Easter Bunny. (He always shows up, so she’ll get in touch with him.)

She also announced April 25, 26 and 27 as dates for the village-wide garage sale. Residents will not need permits to put items out for sale, and she is asking the trash company to designate the following Wednesday, May 1, as the bulk pickup date.

Council member Steven Booker said in the past there hadn’t been many outsiders buying items and suggested some places for the village to advertise relatively inexpensively.

In a discussion about informing the public of events, Brandon Myers said he has applied for a domain name and will try to find a new web posting service so the village site can be more easily and quickly updated.

Council also voted to put the yearly streetlight assessment on the second half of the year’s real estate taxes. This is normally on the first half, but Fiscal Officer Shelley Phillips, who only took office in January, said it had gotten lost in the changeover.

Zoning Office Mark Wyson, Jr., is again searching for solar-powered speed warning signs. The cost led the village to abandon the idea last year, but Wysong said he has seen some better prices.

While he would like a sign at each corporation limit on Main Street and on State Street (Route 49), he felt if only two could be purchased the need was greater on State Street.

Member Heather Craft asked if speed bumps could be installed, saying she had seen some that could be moved as needed.

This led some members to joke that there was such a speed bump at the east edge of the village, where a poorly seated manhole cover has given many drivers and unpleasant jolt.

In spite of the chilly weather, Street Commissioner Wendell Harleman is looking forward to spring. He is preparing the mower for the coming summer and hoping for good enough weather to repair the plexiglass in the “Welcome to Phillipsburg” sign at the gazebo at State and W. Poplar streets.

He also assured council that Balsbaugh Excavating would repair the two spots of broken sewers and the damaged streets above them. He reminded council that Balsbaugh’s bid had offered both repairs for the prices other companies had wanted to charge per site.

The next council meeting will be at 7 p.m. on April 16, in the municipal building at 10868 Brookville Phillipsburg Rd.
