Lady Devils sweep Valley View

BROOKVILLE — Sophomore Maya Haydon generated four hits in a four at bats, including a triple, to help power the Brookville softball team to a 9-2 victory Friday over Valley View, their second win over the Lady Spartans.

Brookville improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in league play while Valley View fell to 2-3 and 0-2.

Brookville coach Mike Gardner feels the Lady Devils will face several good opponents in the Southwestern Buckeye League this season.

“There are a lot of teams that are competitive in the league,” Gardner said. “Carlisle is good, Waynesville is good, and quite honestly Valley View played us tough for most of the innings today and most of the innings on Wednesday. We just had some big innings late in both of these games to put them away, but they have put a good product on the field this year.”

Valley View starting pitcher, Madison Rowland, collapsed in the pitcher’s circle with an apparent knee injury in the bottom of the fifth inning. Her absence from the lineup will no doubt have an impact on her team’s chances for success.

Rowland kept Brookville off the scoreboard until the third inning.

Valley View took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on a lead off bunt single by Olivia Kozuszek. She reached second on a ground out by Jillian Shell and scored on a single through the right side of the infield by Reese Riley.

The Lady Devils tied the game in the home half of the third. Madisyn Cantrell reached first base on a dropped infield pop-up and scored on a two out double by Grace Burton.

Brookville added two more runs in the fourth inning. Freshman Rylan Eagle drew a lead off walk and advanced to second on a pickoff throw by the catcher that sailed into right field. Eagle reached third on a wild pitch and scored on a single to center by Haydon.

Makenzie Roesser drew a walk moving Haydon to second. Jordyn Oliver drew a two out walk to load the bases. Haydon then scored on a passed ball to boost Brookville’s lead to 3-1.

The Lady Devils added six runs in the bottom of the fifth. Burton and Eagle both drew walks with Rowland becoming injured while pitching to Eagle. Haley Turner came on in relief. Haydon singled to center to load the bases.

Roesser drew a walk to bring Burton home. Isabelle Holp followed with a line drive single to left center to score Eagle and Haydon with Roesser advancing to third. Lia Viernes came in as a courtesy runner for Holp. Viernes stole second and Cantrell drew a walk to load the bases.

Oliver followed with a ground ball single to center to score Roesser and Viernes with Cantrell advancing to third. Cantrell scored on a ground out by Haley Hall to put Brookville up 9-1.

Valley View got one run in the sixth on a double by Hayley Duncil and an RBI single by Megan Coleman.

Burton earned the victory for Brookville. She pitched six and two-thirds innings, scattered four hits, with one earned run and 12 strike outs.

“I like what my team is doing,” Gardner said. “So far the defense is pretty solid. Hitting one through nine, I’ve got confidence the girls can put the ball in play. Pitching wise, we will see how that shakes out, but Grace Burton has been a workhorse for us this week. She’s got three of our four wins and in the other game she got the save.”
