During the meeting, it was noted that under new literacy requirements, students not passing third grade reading can move into the fourth grade, but will be in a monitoring and reading plan that can extend to high school.

Elementary Principal Jen Couch said, “I’m not sure what reading intervention is going to look like at the middle school.”

Superintendent Robert Fischer said the reading instruction in the upper grades has to be outside of the regular lessons.

It was also noted that state testing had to be postponed when the system crashed, but the school can’t adjust the schedule in such cases in order to get back the instructional time.

Big news to the school district was that during a special meeting held on Sunday evening, April 28, the board of education unanimously voted to hire current Middle School Principal Couch as the district’s superintendent because Fischer recently accepted the superintendent position at Carlisle Local Schools in Warren County. The next National Trail School Board meeting will be on Tuesday, May 28, at the National Trail School Facility K-12 Facility at 6:30 p.m. in the K-6 cafeteria.
