LEWISBURG — The Village of Lewisburg is preparing to celebrate its bicentennial in 2018. As part of their preparations, the Lewisburg Bicentennial Committee has recently opened a bicentennial storefront. The ribbon cutting ceremony for the newest store in Lewisburg took place on Thursday, May 4.
The new hub for bicentennial news is located at 123 North Commerce Street in Lewisburg.
Hours for the store will differ from week to week depending on when the committee can get volunteers to come in and work the store. Lewisburg Village Council is considering purchasing a signboard for the sidewalk, so people can see when the store is open.
At the store, people can purchase merchandise that the committee is selling to fund-raise for the yearlong celebration. Some of the merchandise which will be available for purchase includes: a Lewisburg Monopoly game, t-shirts, Afghans, and a village book. Not all of the items are currently available and more items will become available as time continues. The committee is constantly coming up with new ideas for the celebration.
The storefront is not only meant to function as a store, but also as a Village of Lewisburg Museum. There documents, pictures, and other historic items can be found and appreciated. It is meant to be a hub of Lewisburg’s history.
Before the actually ribbon cutting ceremony Bicentennial Marketing Committee Member Marsha Jones took the time to thank all of those who helped support their initiative. She said, “Lewisburg will celebrate 200 years of existence in 2018. Thank you to Bicentennial Board of Director President Pam Baker and members for hosting Lewisburg’s Bicentennial Store Front Ribbon Cutting. Thanks to Lewisburg Board of Directors Vice-President and Municipal Manager Jeff Sewert for supporting our mission to commemorate Lewisburg 200th birthday.
“Thank you to Lewisburg Bicentennial Board of Directors Secretary Mindy Harry, committee members, and organizations that represent us for your contribution in honoring our 200 years of history. Thank you to all in attendance for taking part in the event.”
Board Vice-President Sewert added, “I just want to say thank you to everybody here tonight, but I especially want to thank Pam [Baker] for stepping up. Thank you for making this happen, it’s going to be a good year for 2018.”
While the Lewisburg Bicentennial will be a year-long celebrate, there will be a full celebration held on Sept. 7-9, 2018. Planning for the celebration is currently under way.
Bicentennial planning meetings are open to the public and held on the third Monday of every other month. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 19, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lewisburg Community Center.
