EATON — The Preble County Fair always brings an interesting array of food, both salty and sweet. The newest addition to that spectrum is Crackerbillies and the gator bites or stick fairgoers can purchase there.
Yes, you can now eat alligator at the Preble County Fair.
“We’ve been doing this six years — our number one seller is alligator, but shrimp is close behind,” owner Ron Awad said. “We have a brand new menu item that just started today — it’s bourbon chicken and every one who eats bourbon chicken at the food courts is missing out on the best if they do not get ours. It is delicious.”
While chicken and shrimp sells well at Crackerbillies, the alligator is a stand out. Their booth is even decorated with alligators.
Caleb Barrett is from Trenton and comes down to the Preble County Fair every year for the food and tractor pulls. He stopped by Crackerbillies to get some of the gator bites and fries. “Eating alligator is just something that’s always been on my bucket list,” he said. “I’ve never had it and I finally get to cross it off today.”
One alligator consumer said, “It tastes really good. I really like the spice on it, it’s really spicy. It reminds me of Doritos. I would come back and get more.”
As for the alligator itself, Awad said, “Alligator is all white meat. It’s in the top ten healthiest meats in the world. It’s delicious. We make our own recipe of breading and everything we do is cooked to order. It’s been very popular so far today. Our shrimp is awesome too. It’s really big jumbo shrimp, so come on out and see us.”
Of course, Crackerbillies isn’t the only interesting food you can get at the Preble County Fair. This year there’s a coffee truck in addition to the normal fair food finds. There is a spectrum of food to enjoy — bistros to fried everything, funnel cakes and tenderloins.
