Eaton wrestling notches 2nd place

TIPP CITY — The Eaton wrestling squad finished second in the Division II Sectional Tournament at Tippecanoe High School on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 19-20, advancing 11 wrestlers and one alternate to the district championship.

They also had a sixth place finisher in the effort, tallying 13 placers in the sectional.

“We told them that for the next two weeks, all that mattered was placing in the top four as an individual at each meet. Eleven of them met that goal. That speaks well for this group because six of them will be returning next year,” said Eaton head coach Mark Silvers. “Now we focus in on another good week of practice and work on correcting mistakes and perfecting what we do best.”

While no Eagle grappler finished in first place, four ended the day in second place – Wade Monebrake (106), Coleman Manning (126), Drew Moore (160), and Kevin Melling (195).

Moore earned two pins on the day as well.

Brandon Weaver (132), Mac Altom (145), Parker Wilken (170), and Spencer Reynolds (182) were third place finishers while Justin Welcome (138), Issac Ilo (152) and Matt Todd (220) rounded out the day in fourth.

Brain Conard (113) will serve as an alternate with a fifth place finish and Cameron Schmidt (120) ended in sixth.

Eaton scored 185 team points, second only to wrestling powerhouse Graham Local, who ended the weekend with 344.5 total points.

The team will be traveling to Wilmington this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 26-27 for the District Division II Tournament.
