RCO spring concert May 1

RICHMOND, INDIANA — The Richmond Community Orchestra (RCO), under the direction of Jay Conard of Eaton, will be presenting its Spring Concert on Sunday, May 1, at 3:30 p.m. in the Goddard Auditorium of Carpenter Hall on the campus of Earlham College, Richmond, Indiana.

The concert is free to the public. This concert will feature a variety of music for one and all to enjoy including compositions by Beethoven, Wagner, and Handel. The final number will be the grandiose and rousing “Jupiter: The Bringer of Jollity” from “The Planets” by Gustav Holst.

A special treat again this year will be another group of young violinists from Girls, Inc. who are part of the Strings Initiative sponsored by the RCO as a community outreach. The girls have been taking lessons provided by the RCO for about a year now and will be playing one number with the RCO. The number to be played this year, entitled “Twinkling Strings,” was once again composed by the RCO Director, Jay Conard, for this occasion. Joining the young ladies from Girls Inc. will be several other young artists from Hagerstown Arts Place. Several of the young ladies who entered this program in earlier years are now playing in the Richmond and other junior high school orchestras.

The orchestra is made up of volunteer member instrumentalists, ranging in age from high school to well past retirement, from all over the Richmond area, and including Cambridge City, Centerville, Muncie, and Liberty, Indiana, as well as several from Preble County. The RCO is always looking for more musicians to join the orchestra, especially string players.. The orchestra normally practices at Goddard Auditorium on Monday evenings. The mission of the Richmond Community Orchestra is “To encourage lifelong musicianship and appreciation of orchestral music in Richmond, Indiana, and the surrounding area through regular practice and performance.”
