NP Council discusses 10-year plan

NEW PARIS — The Village of New Paris has completed most everything on its 10-year plan, according to Susan Laux of Motes & Associates.

She attended the village’s monthly council meeting on Monday, June 4, to provide an update on funding and ongoing projects.

When asking what projects the village would be interested in submitting, Laux referred to the 10-year plan which was established years prior. It was stated, most everything was completed, but the village will think of other projects they want to pursue in the future to submit for funding.

The village continue to work on Cherry Street, with hopes of bidding in August. Laux also brought a contract for work on the Spring Street Bridge and an ODOT schedule for project awards.

Construction for the bridge should begin in September of 2020, ending in 2021. It will not take a year to complete that bridge, Laux said, and with it scheduled so far out, changes may arise.

In May, the New Paris Police Department handled 119 calls for service, took 21 reports, made three arrests, and issued four citations, and 13 warrants.

The recent car show was a success, according to officials. Through it, they raised over $2,000 for the park fund. The sorority has also donated money for the park fund — specifically, for portable toilets for the park.

During unfinished business, Councilman Luther Conway brought up the issue of chickens in the village, which is against a town ordinance. However, Mayor Kathy Smallwood and Councilwoman Kim Fields explained, in town there are several houses who have land in the township, not village proper. They are allowed to have chickens, as long as the animals are not housed in the village. These houses will have their backyard technically in the township, which allows them to have chickens.

The Village of New Paris will meet again on Monday, July 2, at 7 p.m. in the NP Village Building.
