NEW PARIS — A New Paris man is dead and a child hospitalized after a tractor overturned on Saturday, Feb. 5, according to Preble County Sheriff’s reports.

In a press release Monday morning, Feb. 6, Sheriff Mike Simpson reported that at approximately 5:53 p.m. Saturday deputies were dispatched to 4371 Crubaugh Road regarding an overturned farm tractor with entrapment.

“The preliminary investigation found that a 1970 John Deere farm tractor was traveling westbound on Crubaugh Road, driven by Michael J. Toschlog, 41, and his son, John L. Toschlog, 7, both of New Paris. Deputies believe there was a malfunction with the front two tires, causing the tractor to travel off the left side the roadway, into a field and overturning.”

Michael Toschlog was trapped for approximately 30 minutes while Northwest Fire/EMS personnel worked to free him, according to Simpson. He was flown by Medflight to Dayton Kettering Hospital’s Main Campus where he was pronounced dead.

John Toschlog was ejected from the tractor and transported to Reid Hospital by Lewisburg EMS, where he was being treated for his injuries at press time, according to the release.

The crash remained under investigation by the Preble County Sheriff’s Office and the Preble County Coroner’s Office at press time.
