Eaton girls end season with first round loss; boys conclude regular season

PREBLE COUNTY — The season came to end for one county girls basketball team this past week, while the boys teams concluded their regular season.

Eaton’s girls rallied from an early 14-point fourth quarter deficit to force overtime in its Division II sectional opener against No. 5 seed Greenon, but ultimately fell 72-64 on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at Tecumseh High School.

The first round loss was the first for the Eagles since the 2017-18 season. Last year, Eaton, which finished this season 12-11, was a regional semifinalist.

This was the fourth straight season the Eagles have won double-digit games.

Against Greenon, the Eagles fell behind 20-12 after one and were down 30-25 at the half. The Knights extended their lead to 48-37 after three.

The Eagles used an 18-4 run over the games final five minutes to force overtime.

Senior Lily Shepherd, who scored her 1,000th career point in the regular season finale, paced Eaton with 24 points, two steals and two rebounds.

Senior Olivia Baumann concluded her career with an 11 point, six rebound, three assist performance. She ended with career with just shy of 900 career rebounds, which is believed to be a school record.

Senior Kendall Miller wrapped up her career with five points and six rebounds.

Sophomore Olivia Orr contributed 12 points and six rebounds and freshman Emilee Hargis tossed in eight points to go along with five rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Eaton finished the regular season the week before winning two of their final three games, including a 57-42 win at Edgewood on Saturday, Feb. 4.

On the boys side, Eaton concluded its regular season dropping its final six games including losses to Brookville, Madison and Preble Shawnee last week.

Eaton finished the season 7-15 overall and 3-10 in the Southwestern Buckeye League.

The Eagles will begin sectional tournament play on Friday, Feb. 17 against Bellbrook at 7:30 p.m. at Springfield High School.

National Trail ended its season with a 47-42 win over Tri-County North on Friday, Feb. 10.

Nick Brubaker led the way with 11 points and three rebounds and Gaje Lesh tossed in 11 points and had two steals.

Kellen Laird and Joel Hunt each added seven for the Blazers.

Logan Flory led the way for North with 14 points, including seven in the third when the Panthers rallied from a 26-17 deficit to take a 31-30 after three.

Jon Shirley added 13, with 10 coming in the second half and Dominic Lynch finished with 11.

Trail, now 4-18 overall and 2-9 in the Western Ohio Athletic Conference, was scheduled to begin tournament play on Tuesday, Feb. 14 against No. 1 seed Miami East.

North finished the regular season 0-11 in the WOAC and 1-21 overall. The Panthers will open sectional tournament play on Thursday, Feb. 16 at Troy High School against No. 1 seed Troy Christian at 6 p.m.

Twin Valley South played at the historic Hoosier Gym on Friday, Feb. 10 to wrap up WOAC play.

The Panthers defeated Franklin-Monroe 62-59.

South was led by Jandon Ankrom with 18 points, four rebounds and four assists. Jace Thuma added 10 points and four rebounds.

Chandler Ulrich chipped in with eight points and Eric Allison, Seth Vorhis and Conner Mowell each added seven.

South ends the regular season 7-15 and 3-8 in the WOAC.

The Panthers open tournament play on Friday, Feb. 17 against Dayton Christian at Troy High School. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
