Shawnee cruises to tournament win

COVINGTON — Preble Shawnee’s girls basketball team really didn’t need much motivation for its first-round sectional tournament game.

After all, the Arrows have their sights set on getting back to the district final and winning this time around.

But if the Arrows did need extra motivation, Springfield Northwestern certainly gave it to them.

During the tournament draw, the Warriors voted the Arrows well below the number three seed Shawnee eventually received.

That wasn’t lost on head coach Maggie Neanen during preparation leading up to the game.

The Arrows shot 50 percent for the game and forced 23 turnovers en route to a convincing 68-40 win on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Covington High School.

“All week we’ve talked about them. We kind of had a chip on our shoulder they kind of seeded us slower than everybody else, actually the lowest out of everyone and we kind of played with that.” Neanen said. “Defensively, we knew we were the better team. We studied their film all week. Credit to the girls. They put in the work.”

The Arrows were 13-of-24 from the field in the first half and finished game making 26-of-52 shots.

They forced the Warriors into turnovers on six of their first seven possessions while taking a 13-2 lead.

Senior Campbell Jewell led the way with 24 points, including 18 in the first half as the Arrows built a 34-14 lead.

Seniors Harlee Howard finished with 12, while senior Liv Thompson and junior Korrie Woodard each had eight. Junior Autumn Smith finished with six.

“Offensively, I think everybody scored, but maybe one, for us in our rotation, so that was nice to see,” Neanen said. “I thought we played selfless. I thought we played very good team basketball.”

With the win, Shawnee moves on to the sectional final on Wednesday, Feb. 15 to play No. 15 seed Graham at 7:30 p.m.
