Camden saying ‘yes’ to chickens

CAMDEN — After time for consideration, Camden Village Council responded to a resident’s request to amend a livestock ordinance in the village during a Thursday, March 2, meeting. The resident, Elizabeth Jones, spoke during a prior meeting where she presented a petition to allow chickens and poultry within village limits.

Jones’ petition boasted 277 signers.

“The discussion we had last meeting with the chickens — it looks like council has decided we will amend for chickens, but we will get back with you on the rules of chicken life,” remarked Mayor Toni Keesler.

Keesler explained further, the ordinance will be amended in the near future, and council will “establish requirements” regarding the upkeep of said livestock. Keesler added the ordinance amendments will be prepared by the Thursday, March 16, meeting.

In other business:

• Village Administrator Rusty Wilson informed council he has planted “thousands” of the stockpiled daffodil flower bulbs around Camden.

“If they all come up, it’s going to be really yellow around here,” he jested.

Camden Village Council meetings are public meetings held on the first and third Thursday of each month, at 7 p.m. at Camden Town Hall.
