Aggregation meeting planned April 4

BROOKVILLE — City manager Sonja Keaton announced an information meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 4, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in council chambers on the city’s proposal to establish government electricity and natural gas aggregation programs with opt-out provisions.

In order to establish the programs, voters must approve two ordinances – one for electric aggregation and one for gas aggregation – that will appear on the May 2 special election ballot.

The electric aggregation question is Issue #13 while the gas aggregation question is issue #14 on the ballot.

According to Keaton, the two programs are being considered in an effort to establish better electric and gas rates for residents and small businesses.

“Aggregation allows a municipality, in conjunction with other jurisdictions in the area, to negotiate a bulk rate for electricity and/or natural gas supplied to residences and small businesses,” Keaton explained when first introducing the proposal to council on Dec. 6.

“Government aggregation lets the city negotiate with electric and/or natural gas providers on behalf of a large number of customers,” Keaton said.

The city is partnering with the Miami Valley Communications Council on establishing electric and gas aggregations.

MVCC is working with Palmer Energy, of Toledo, in securing the best possible electric and natural gas rates.

Amy Hoffman, customer service manager for Palmer Energy, told council on Dec. 20, her company “will go out and price your load with the others to multiple suppliers to get a competitive rate.”

“We are looking at residents and small businesses who are still receiving electrical service from AES. They are the ones who would be eligible. We don’t take people who already have contracts with other suppliers,” Hoffman said.
