Planners approve special use permit

BROOKVILLE — Planning commission gave its permission to allow What’s the Scoop and Calioh Eats, LLC to once a month park a mobile pizza food truck and operate in front of the ice cream shop’s location at 230 Market St.

“What’s the Scoop, at 230 Market St., and Calioh Eats, a pizza mobile food truck, have jointly requested a special use permit to have the pizza mobile food truck once a month from 10 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.,” Brookville Law Director Rod Stephan told planning commission.

“This would be a special event for What’s the Scoop. The pizza truck would be located in public parking near What’s the Scoop,” Stephan continued.

Stephan informed planning commission because the event begins at 10 p.m. most of the other businesses in the Market Street area will be closed.

“Under 1163.03(b) (26), planning commission may approve a mobile food vendor located on public parking owned by the city of Brookville,” Stephan said.

“It is recommended that planning commission approve the special use permit that will allow the mobile food truck to operate at that location during the once-a-month special event,” Stephan continued.

“We just want to do a two-hour event we call ‘A Midnight Snack,’” What’s the Scoop owner Tracy Brown said, adding Calioh Eats plans to sell pizza by the slice.

Brown said the idea of the special once-a-month dates is to provide a place for people, especially teens, to go in the evening.

“We want some place for kids and people to go on special nights, like prom night, that’s a safe place,” Brown said.

“Parents can bring their kids out at 10 p.m. to get a snack and then head home. It’s an opportunity to have something fun to do,” Brown continued.

Brookville Mayor Chuck Letner said he liked the idea of operating the food truck in the city.

“I would like a food truck rally in Brookville, but my only concern is have you talked to your neighbors about your plan?” Letner asked.

Letner specifically asked if Brown has talked with the owner of Sarah’s Pizza Restaurant, located at 224 Market St.

“I haven’t, but I will stop to talk to him. They close at 10 p.m. At least that’s what their website says,” Brown replied.

Brown said the plan is to hold the once-a-month events through September.

“That’s the food truck season,” Brown said.

Brown indicated the first event will take place the night of Brookville High School’s prom scheduled for April 15.
