Union to annex 86 acres from Butler Township

UNION — At its April 10 meeting, City of Union council adopted Ordinance 1767 under emergency status indicating the services the city would provide to 86.248 acres proposed to be annexed from Butler Township.

The land would expand Union’s Global Logistics Air Park, the city’s massive industrial complex located adjacent to Dayton International Airport.

Proctor & Gamble in 2014 opened a 1.8 million square foot distribution center in the Global Logistics Air Park and Amazon has constructed a 3.2 million square foot fulfillment center across the street, which is scheduled to be operational sometime in June.

The Amazon facility is expected to employ an estimated 1,500 people.

The acreage in the proposed annexation borders Peters Pike to the east and N. Montgomery County Line to the north.

“This needs to be passed as an emergency to meet the time requirements of the Ohio Revised Code and the board of county commissioners,” said John Applegate, city manager.

March 9 Union filed a petition to annex the land with the Board of County Commissioners of Montgomery County, which was signed by the majority of owners of the property seeking to annex their property from Butler Township to the city.

The petition for annexation has been set for hearing on May 23 at 1:30 p.m. in the county commissioners’ chambers on the 10th floor of the county administration building, 451 W. Third St., Dayton.

If the annexation is approved, the ordinance details the services the city would provide to the entire annexed territory. Those services would include fire and emergency medical, police, street construction and maintenance, ice and snow removal, storm water utility maintenance, water, sewer and planning and zoning and development services.

Water and sewer service would be available immediately upon annexation, but connection to those services is not mandatory.

Services would be provided by the city to the annexed territory under the same terms and conditions and subject to the rates, rules and regulations established by city ordinances including codified ordinances, as they are provided to other properties located within the city.

City services will be available to the annexed territory when the city’s ordinance or resolution accepting the annexation becomes final and the annexation becomes effective as provided by law.
