Gratis PD cracking down on unmoving vehicles

GRATIS — During a Thursday, April 27, Gratis Village Council meeting, council received the bimonthly report from Police Chief T.J. Johnson.

Johnson spoke about derelict vehicles around the village, as well as a security issue along Parrish Drive.

“David Fields’ two vehicles got a 72-hour notice put on them today. He’s had well over enough time to move things. I don’t know what his plans are, but it looks like he’s getting them ready to go to a scrapyard,” Johnson began. “Hopefully, that will incentivize him to get them there within 30 days.”

Johnson inquired of council the locations of any additional derelict vehicles within the village in need of action. Council noted vehicles at Coleman Avenue, North Street and along Franklin Street.

Johnson reminded council he is required by law to give owners of derelict or non-moving vehicles notice to move or remove the vehicles before he can take action.

According to Chief Johnson, a vacant residence on Parrish Drive in the village has been broken into numerous times. Johnson intends to monitor the residence personally, as well as install security cameras around the building.

Gratis Village Council meetings are open to the public and held the second and fourth Thursdays of the month, beginning at 6:30 p.m., at the Village Administration Office located at 404 East Harrison Street, Gratis.
