EATON — The Preble County Historical Society (PCHS) and Nature Reserve celebrated Global Youth Service Day on Saturday, April 29, and also hosted a Troop 78 Boy Scouts presentation.

“Through a grant received from Serve Ohio, the Preble County Historical Society and Nature Reserve received funds to build 4 new workout activities along our red trail system, which is now considered the health and wellness trail,” PCHS Director Lisa White said.

“Several Preble County students showed up to build and install the new pieces with leadership from Harold Niehaus, PCHS President. The trails are open seven days a week from dawn until dusk to explore,” White concluded.

According to Youth Service America (YSA) the 35-year-old event is “the longest-running annual youth participation event in the world and the only one that asks all youth ages 5-25 to find meaning and purpose by working together for the common good.”

White also noted Shane Osborn from Troop 78 in Eaton received his Eagle Scout recognition.

“Shane completed several wood benches along the storybook trail provided by the Preble County Library, which is located on the Blue trail system at the Preble County Historical Society and Nature Reserve. Travis Castle, Scout Master, presented Osborn with his award at a ceremony,” said White.

State Representative Rodney Creech and Preble County Commissioner Adam Craft attended the ceremony and Creech presented Osborn with a certificate honoring his achievements.

Troop 78 meets Tuesday nights at 6:30 p.m. in the social hall at Eaton United Methodist Church, 120 North Maple Street, Eaton. From June 1 to Sept. 1, Troop 78 meets every other week at Fort St. Clair Park.
