Spartans turn back Blue Devils

BROOKVILLE — It was a “Pink Out” night at Brookville to honor and remember those who have had and survived or have lost a battle to cancer. A combined walk by fans and both teams around the football after the game gave the definitive explanation of sports, it is just a game.

Waynesville controlled the game at the line of scrimmage, especially against the Brookville offense, and that resulted in a 21-14 Spartan win, leaving both teams at three wins and one loss for the season.

The Blue Devils battled hard throughout the game but Waynesville was just a tad better in making plays and the result was a Spartan victory. Brookville scored the first 14 points in the game.

The Spartans scored the game’s final 21 points to earn their third win of the season.

Brookville fans were delighted after the first quarter as Brookville came out fast and in control early. The Blue Devils defensive stopped Waynesville in three plays and after a punt took possession at the Brookville 45.

On third and seven, Keegan Mehr launched a long pass down the middle of the field and Seth Hoover outfought a Spartan for the ball and then raced the final 23 yards for a touchdown. Walt Adams booted the PAT and Brookville led 7-0 9:22 on the first period clock.

Waynesville drove down the field on the next possession. A run and a pass each picked up 11 yards. The Spartans got to the 19 and were facing fourth and one. A run up the middle was stopped for a loss of one as Brookville got penetration by the defensive line.

Starting at the 20 Brookville moved 80 yards in 11 plays taking 5:28 off the clock to take a two-score lead. Kory Davis then circled the left end and pranced into the end zone on a nine yard run. Walt Adams booted the PAT to give Brookville a 14-0 lead with 23 seconds left in the first period.

After an exchange of punts the game began to change. On third down and eight Keegan Mehr kept the ball and raced for a long gain to midfield. However, Brookville was called for a chop block and the play came back. Brookville was forced to punt.

The Spartans began their possession at the 46-yard and began a drive that would last 12 plays and result in a touchdown. Brookville jumped offside to give the Spartans a first down to continue the drive. Garrett Lundy circled right end to score on a five yard run and after Berrey booted the PAT it was 14-7 Brookville at halftime.

Brookville got the ball to start the second half and promptly went three and out. Brookville punted and was called for face mask on the return and the Spartans had the ball at the Brookville 25. It took eight plays for the Spartans to tie the game.

Following a pass for a first down, a pair of penalties wiped out gains for the Spartans and it was first and 29 at one point. Amburgy completed a pass to Davis to the 23. Then Amburgy tossed a deep pass that Connor Berry, running a skinny post pattern, snagged in stride at the two and he went into the end zone for a 23 yard touchdown. Berrey then tied the game with his PAT at 7:20 in the third quarter.

The Blue Devils gained a first down but then stalled and punted to the Spartan 25. Again, the Spartans scored on an eight-play drive that took 3:39 to travel the 75 yards. A long pass from Amburgy to Trenton Davis set up the winning TD. Amburgy kept the ball went to his right and cut inside for a two yard touchdown. The kick made the score 21-14 Waynesville with 1:26 left in the third frame.

Frustration began for Brookville after getting a first down. The Blue Devils got a good run around left end. However, at the end of the play the ball bounced free and Waynesville recovered the ball at the Spartan 43.

With 1:50 remaining in the game Mehr completed a pass to Adams for nine yards. Another short toss to Adams moved the ball to the 32. Mehr took off and scrambled to the 43. After an incomplete pass Brookville got two yards on a run and then five yards on a pass to Kory Davis. Facing 4th and three, Mehr looked to pass but an all blitz resulted in a sack and the game.

Brookville had 277 total yards, 128 rushing and 149 passing. Waynesville garnered 251 yards with 69 rushing and 182 passing. Brookville had 12 first downs and Waynesville 17. Brookville fumbled twice and lost one, but yielded no points off the turnover. Penalties show Waynesville six for 63 yards and Brookville four for 50 yards.

Waynesville had 75 plays and Brookville 62. Time of possession shows Waynesville with 25:52 and Brookville 22:08. Waynesville was 4/11 on third downs and 0/1 on 4th downs. Brookville was 5/13 on third downs and 0/2 on 4th downs. Red Zone shows Brookville one for one for a touchdown. Waynesville was in the Red Zone four tines and scored three touchdowns and was stopped on downs on the other occasion.

For Waynesville, Lundy had 41 yards rushing on 15 totes and Amburgy 28 on 11 carries. Each had a touchdown. Amburgy was 17 for 23 passing for 182 yards and a touchdown. Connor Berrey had seven catches for 98 yards and a TD. Trenton Davis snagged seven balls for 71 yards.

Brookville stats show Jake Lenser with 40 yards on ten runs. Keegan Mehr had 34 yards on eight totes, Walt Adams had eight lugs and 27 yards, and Kory Davis garnered 27 yards on four carries and a touchdown. Mehr was six of 16 passing for 149 yards and a TD. Receiving has Seth Hoover with 57 yards on two catches and a touchdown. Walt Adams three snags for 54 yards, and Sam Fullenkamp one catch for 38 yards.

Defensive stats show Dane Moore with five tackles and three assists; Xavier Stacy five stops and a pair of assists; with four tackles and an assist were Karl Karlsson, Kory Davis, and Walt Adams; making four stops each were Seth Hoover, and Keegan Mehr; and with three stops and an assist was Jake Lenser.

Brookville is now 3-1 on the season and 0-1 in the SWBL Buckeye Division. Brookville will travel to Madison Friday night to challenge the undefeated Mohawks. The game will be broadcast on the free internet radio website Brookvillesports.com with the broadcast starting at 6:35 p.m.
