Blue Devils bewilder Vikings 55-3

BROOKVILLE — The Brookville Blue Devils rolled over the Miami East Vikings 55-3 to advance to the second round of the playoffs. Brookville will host Preble Shawnee Friday night. The Blue Devils are now 9-2 overall.

The Blue Devils forced a three and out and after Walt Adams returned the punt to the Vikings 27, Jake Lenser bolted up the gut for 16 yards. Dane Moore scampered to the one. One play later Keegan Mehr scored and Brookville led 7-0 following the PAT from Walt Adams.

On the next Vikings possession Mehr intercepted a pass by KJ Gustin ball and returned it 38 yards for his second touchdown of the game 36 seconds after the Blue Devils first score. The kick sailed wide and with 8:24 on the clock Brookville led 13-0.

Forcing another three and out and a punt return to the Vikings 41, Jake Lenser took off up middle, broke free, and bolted 41 yards for Brookville’s third touchdown of the game. Keegan Mehr ran in the two-point conversion and with 6:45 on the clock Brookville led 21-0.

The Blue Devils had scored 21 points in two minutes and fifteen seconds to seize control of the game.

East drove to the Brookville 33 where a holding penalty negated a first down and the Vikings sere stopped on a fourth down play. Brookville scored on one play again as Mehr kept the ball on the QB draw and raced 53 yards for a touchdown, his fourth trip into the end zone in the quarter, three of them for touchdowns. It was 28-0 following the extra point kick by Adams.

In the second frame, Adams went around the end to race 85 yards for another touchdown for Brookville. Adams’ kick made it 35-0 with 8:57 remaining in the first half.

Brookville stopped the Vikings on a 4th and goal and got the ball back. It took six plays to score with DJ Moore breaking off a 33 yard scamper by diving and hitting the pylon with the ball for the touchdown. Adams’ PAT increased Brookville’s lead to 42-0 with just 1:30 left in the half.

The second half was played under running clock rules. Brookville took the kickoff and went downfield scoring on the seventh play when Dane Moore negotiated the final 17 yards on a sweep. Adams’ kick made it 49-0 Brookville with five minutes remaining in the third frame.

East got their first points as they drove into the red zone and facing a long fourth down sent out their kicker Katie Paulus who was perfect on a 27 yard field goal with 26 seconds left in the third period.

Brookville scored the game’s final points in the fourth quarter as Braylon Donohoo scored from the four. The PAT try was blocked and Brookville had won the game 55-3.

Game Notes from Brookville Football Historian Larry Myers show Miami East was the 61st different opponent for Brookville. The Blue Devils are now 11-15 in playoff games and 4-3 in home playoff games. First time since 2012 to have a pair of 50 point games in a season; first time to have a score 55-3; 3rd time a point difference was 52, the last time was 1960; 7th time an opponent had three points; 7th time a game totaled 58 points; this is the fifth time Brookville has scored over 400 points in a season (413); and the 55 points was the most Brookville has ever scored in a playoff game surpassing the 49 against Greeneview in 2015.

Brookville had 17 first downs and East 13. Brookville had 388 total yards, all rushing, as the Blue Devils only attempted one pass.

East had 213 total yards, just 31 rushing and 182 passing. Brookville had three interceptions and scored six points off those turnovers. Third down conversions show East was 6/15 and Brookville was 1/3. 4th downs Brookville was one for two and East zero for two.

Brookville had 50 plays and the Vikings 65. The Devils had the ball for 24:16 and the Vikings 23:44. Red Zone Brookville was 3/3 for three touchdowns and East was 1/3 with a field goal, losing the ball on downs and an interception.

Stats for Miami East show Aaron Mills with 24 yards rushing on 14 carries. KJ Gustin was 13 of 28 passing for 182 yards and three interceptions. Lincoln Littlejohn was the leading receiver with four balls for 30 yards. Dylan Haught had the most yards receiving with 69 on two snags.

Brookville was 0/1 passing and had only one punt from Bayne Boston for 43 yards. Rushing shows Walt Adams had 109 yards on four carries and a touchdown. Jake Lenser had 82 yards on six lugs and a touchdown.

Keegan Mehr had two touchdowns rushing and a PAT and 54 yards on two totes. Dane Moore 53 yards on five tries and a touchdown; DJ Moore 51 yards on five carries and a touchdown; Bayne Boston 21 yards on five lugs; Jayden Resor 12 yards on a pair of totes; and Braylon Donohoo six yards and a touchdown on two tries.

Defensive stats show Keegan Mehr with an interception and a 38 yard return for a touchdown. Dane Moore and DJ Moore each had an interception. Walt Adams and Seth Hoover each had six tackles. Brookville had six sacks, two each from Dane Moore and Lane Willoughby and one each from Sam Fullenkamp and Sam Norby.
