LEWISBURG — Tri-County North’s girls basketball team split a pair of games last week, while the boys team tipped off the season with a loss.
The girls’ team fell to Ansonia 34-28 in a Western Ohio Athletic Conference game on Thursday, Nov. 30, then won a non-conference matchup with WOAC foe Newton, 46-39 on Saturday, Dec. 2.
Against Ansonia, the Panthers, who trailed 15-10 after the first quarter, went scoreless in the second quarter to fall behind 25-10 at the half.
Hannah Webster led North with nine points and three rebounds. Nicole Lefeld added seven points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.
Against Newton, the Panthers held a 9-7 lead after the first quarter and were up 24-21 at the half.
North extended its lead to 37-30 after three.
Nani Garcia led the way with 15 points, five steals and three assists. Bella Cherry tossed in eight and had six steals. Webster had another solid game scoring 13 points and pulling down 10 rebounds, while blocking five shots.
North (3-2, 0-1 WOAC), was scheduled to play at New Miami on Monday, Dec. 4 and will travel to National Trail on Thursday, Dec. 7. The Panthers will close out the week with a trip to Middletown Christian on Saturday, Dec. 9.
The Panthers boys team began the season at home with a non-conference game with Middletown Christian and fell 68-54.
North had three players foul out and a fourth finished the game with four fouls in head coach Garrett Woodyard’s first game as head coach.
The Panthers trailed 10-9 after one and were down 31-26 at the break. North kept their deficit at five heading into the fourth quarter, 42-37.
In the fourth, Middletown Christian went 11-of-14 from the foul line to pull away for the win.
Logan Flory led North with 17 points. Corbin Flory tossed in 15, while Parker Overcash added eight and Clint Barnes added seven.
North (0-1) is scheduled to host National Trail on Friday, Dec. 8.
