Oakwood hot shooting downs Devils

BROOKVILLE — The Oakwood Lumberjacks are quick and can shoot the lights out and that is what they did in downing Brookville 75-66 at Brookville last Friday night.

Brookville dropped 6-4 on the season and 2-3 in the SWBL Buckeye Division. Oakwood improved to 8-1 overall and maintained first place in the Buckeye Division with a record 5-1.

Oakwood shot 56 percent during the game making 25 of 45 shots, including a blistering 11 for 25 from behind the arc.

Leading the way for the Lumberjacks was five-foot eight-inch junior guard Luke Rubin who scored 31 points in the game. Rubin was eight of 14 shooting and five of eight from long distance during the game.

Rubin gave Oakwood the lead by draining three consecutive three-point shots from 25 feet late in the first period of play. Rubin was also an impressive 10 of 12 from the foul line.

Aiden Jacomet added 16 points including a pair of trifectas and Owen Hoersting scored 14 points for the Lumberjacks.

Brookville battled hard the entire 32 minutes of the game. The Blue Devils trailed by 13 late in the first half but scored the final seven points of the second period to trail 36-30 at the half.

The Devils battled and took a one-point lead in the third period but Oakwood answered with a late hoop to lead going into the final stanza 54-53.

In the final quarter, twice Brookville got the lead by a point. The second time Brookville led 58-57 and Oakwood then scored the next ten points and made enough free throws down the stretch to hang on for the win.

The quarter scores show Oakwood leading 20-14 after the first quarter. It was 36-30 Lumberjacks at the half. Brookville cut the lead to one after three frames at 54-53. The final stanza showed Oakwood outscoring Brookville 21-13 to win the game by a final score of 75-66.

Oakwood team stats show the Lumberjacks grabbing 29 rebounds and committing 19 turnovers.

Brookville stats show the Blue Devils were 26 of 64 shooting for 40.6 percent including four of 20 from long distance. Brookville snagged 31 rebounds, had 15 assists, nine steals and 14 turnovers.

Individual stats for the Blue Devils show Jace Wood with 22 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Dom King added 14 points, four boards, four assists, and two steals. Brendan Fisher scored eight markers and grabbed three rebounds and had three assists.

Keegan Mehr had six points and five rebounds. Coltin Lawson added six points and three rebounds. Braedan Smart scored five points and had three rebounds. Cole Crabtree scored four points and had four assists and two steals. Nathan Waggoner added one point.

Brookville will play at Carlisle Friday and will host Twin Valley South Saturday for the Hall of Fame night at Brookville.
