Brookville fails to receive grant money

BROOKVILLE — City manager Sonja Keaton informed council the city did not receive grant money for three city projects.

Keaton said the city did not receive Community Development Block Grant money that would have been used to demolish the former Lebanon Citizens National Bank’s drive-thru building, located on Hay Avenue.

Keaton also said the city did not receive grant money from the Ohio Public Works Commission for two proposed projects.

The projects are the Hay Avenue roadway improvement phase III project and the Main Street water main replacement, phase II project.

Keaton said she had submitted a CDBG application, requesting $22,500 that would be used to help pay for the demolition of the LCNB drive-thru building.

Keaton explained the large amount of requests from communities for CDBG funds was the reason the city did not receive CDBG money for the project.

“A total of 23 CDBG applications were submitted this year requesting just shy of $2.2 million ($2,160,302),” Keaton said.

Keaton said CDBG officials were only able to provide funding “just shy of $925,000 ($924,887).”

Keaton noted the city did receive $75,000 in CDBG grant money that will be used toward the purchase and installation of an inclusive playground in Golden Gate Park, located at 545 Upper Lewisburg-Salem Road.

The city purchased the former LCNB property in order to build a public parking lot.

Keaton said she learned the city didn’t receive grant money for the Hay Avenue and Main Street projects when she received the meeting agenda and packet from the OPWC.

Keaton noted 13 of the 36 state capital improvement projects submitted to the OPWC will be funded.

“Seven of those 13 projects are Montgomery County projects,” Keaton said.

“So you can see how competitive this funding opportunity is,” Keaton continued.

Keaton noted the Hay Avenue phase III project was ranked 21st by the OPWC while the Main Street water main replacement phase II project was ranked 30th.
