City seeks Golden Gate Park caretaker

BROOKVILLE — A caretaker is needed at Golden Gate Park.

“Our caretaker visited my office and shared with me she is going to give up the caretaker position at Golden Gate Park on May 31,” Brookville City Manager Sonja Keaton told the park board.

Keaton said Diana Slade is resigning from the position in order to spend more time with her family.

“She’s done a good job,” Keaton said.

Keaton said anyone interested in the position may email a letter of interest to finance director Michelle Brandt at [email protected] or send the letter to her at 301 Sycamore St., P.O. Box 10, Brookville Ohio, 45309.

The park board established Saturday, March 23, from 10 a.m. until noon as the city-wide park clean up day.

The annual event is open to any resident who wishes to help with the clean up of the city’s parks.

Keaton said she plans to reserve the Montgomery County Community Pride Clean-up supply trailer to help with the clean up of the city parks.

“I would like to get the clean-up date scheduled as soon as possible so I can reserve the large trailer because it has a lot more equipment on it to help with the clean up,” Keaton said.

The trailer is stocked with tools and materials to help in the removal of debris and litter.

The list of tools in the trailer include gas-powered lawn mowers, gas-powered line trimmers, garden and drain spades, gas-powered leaf blowers, gas can, bow saws, rakes (bow, landscape, leaf), shovels (square and round), cloth gloves, latex gloves, goggles, earplugs, safety glasses, brooms, aluminum dust pans, trash cans with lids, garbage bags, standard and pole pruners, pitch forks, hedge shears, electric hedge trimmer, loppers and wheelbarrows.

The Montgomery County Environmental Services staff members will deliver the trailer to Golden Gate Park, located at 545 Upper Lewisburg-Salem Road. The staff members will also retrieve the trailer.

Keaton noted the trailer was reserved last year, but the inclement weather prevented the equipment in the trailer from being used.

The park board will provide hot dogs and refreshments in Golden Gate Park’s shelter #3 at the conclusion of the clean-up event.

Keaton informed park board members she received the $500 donation from Metronet.

“Metronet, which is the carrier that has been installing the internet throughout Brookville the last couple of years, reached out to me in October and asked if the city has any events they could support,” Keaton said at the Dec. 12 park board meeting.

Keaton indicated Metronet has a community engagement team “that is continually looking for opportunities to get involved in the community.”

“I shared with them about the Christmas in the Park event and they advised me they will be donating $500,” Keaton said.

Keaton told park board members after adding the $500 donation, the park board has a little less than $1,300 available to spend for next year’s Christmas in the Park event.

Keaton noted letters to such organizations as the Brookville Soccer Association, the Brookville Baseball Club and the Brookville Pee Wee football organization were sent requesting their signed 2024 agreements, a list of their board members, a copy of their 2023 financial statement, their 2024 season schedules and a copy of their certificate of liability insurance.

“I also requested a representative of each of those organizations attend a park board meeting so that way they can update you on their activities from last year and what their plans are for this year,” Keaton said.

Keaton informed park board members she also sent letters out to the various youth groups “that use our buildings requesting their 2024 schedules so we can get them in the book.”

“Our parks are very busy, especially Golden Gate Park, with the various requests for building rentals,” Keaton said.

Park board approved three special event permit requests from the Brookville Optimist Club for events to take place in Golden Gate Park in 2024.

The events are:

• adult egg scramble – Saturday, March 9 (8-8:30 p.m.)

• childrens’ egg hunt – Saturday March 30 (9-9:30 a.m.)

• pumpkin walk – Saturday, Nov. 2 (6-8:30 p.m.)
