Devils split games with Carlisle & South

BROOKVILLE — The Brookville Blue Devils used a series of runs to defeat the Twin Valley South Panthers 80-52 Saturday night at the Devils Den in Brookville. The win lifted Brookville to a record of 8-5 on the season while South dropped to 3-8.

It was Hall of Fame night at Brookville and after seeing the induction of Corey Eagle and Bill Idle the packed gym watched as both teams battled throughout the evening. Brookville placed three in double figures while South had two players reach double digits.

South seniors Jandon Ankrom and Jace Thuma had 14 and 13 points respectively. Brookville saw three seniors reach double-digits. Jace Wood tallied 23, Cole Crabtree added 20, and Brendan Fisher tossed in 16 points.

South grabbed an early 9-1 lead before Brookville started to find the range. Crabtree drained a three, Wood got a basket, and Crabtree scored inside as Brookville cut the deficit to one.

Following a pair of charity shots by the Panthers Jace Thuma, Braedan Smart converted an old fashioned three-point play to tie the game at 11. Dom King and Thuma traded baskets before Brendan Fisher hit a shot just before the buzzer to give the Blue Devils a 15-13 advantage to end the first frame. Thuma scored eight for South and freshman Trent Ray added five in the quarter.

In the second quarter Brookville parlayed a run of 16-5 to seize control of the game to lead 34-20. The halftime score was 36-22 Blue Devils. Jace Wood heated up with 12 points and Bredan Fisher added a pair of trifectas for the Devils in the frame. Griffin Roell scored seven in the period for South.

The third stanza saw Brookville go on 10-0 run midway through the action and a nine-point run to end the quarter. The score was 62-39 heading into the final period.

For Brookville Crabtree had 11 points, Wood seven markers, and Fisher five points in the period. South saw Ankrom score six and Chandler Ulrich add five markers.

In the final period Brookville maintained the lead before the final score of 80-52. The 80 points is the most points scored by Brookville since scoring 80 against Covington in 2019 and 81 against Preble Shawnee in the 2014 post season.

Scoring for the Panthers in the game was Jandon Ankrom 14; Jace Thuma 13; Griffin Roell nine; Trent Ray eight; Chandler Ulrich seven; and Seth Vorhis one.

Brookville stats Jace Wood with 23 points and nine rebounds. Cole Crabtree scored 20 points, had three assists, and three steals. Brendan Fisher scored 16 points. Braedan Smart added nine points. Carter Saylors scored six points, which were his first varsity points in his career.

Brookville lost to Carlisle 62-56 in overtime Friday at Carlisle. The loss dropped Brookville to three wins and four losses in the SWBL Buckeye Division. The loss was tough to swallow for Brookville as the Blue Devils held a six-point lead with just over two minutes to go in regulation.

Carlisle rallied to tie the game and Brookville turned the ball over while trying for a last second shot. In overtime Carlisle outscored Brookville 11-5 and earned the win. The teams split a pair of Division games during the season. With the win Carlisle stays one game behind Oakwood in the Buckeye Division race.

The quarter scores were 12-8 Carlisle; 25-24 Indians at the half; 43-40 Brookville after three frames; tied at 51 after four quarters; and the final of 62-56 in overtime.

Blake Lawson of Carlisle had 22 points. Justyce Taylor had a monster game with 17 points and 17 rebounds. Brendon Rowe added 12 markers for the Tribe. Carlisle shot 22-45 for 49 percent. The Indians grabbed 35 rebounds.

The Blue Devils shot 41 percent making 21 of 51 tries including eight of 22 behind the arc. Brookville snagged 19 rebounds during the game.

Blue Devils scoring showed Cole Crabtree with a career high of 24 points with three assists and three steals. Jace Wood added 11 points and five assists. Dom King scored ten points and had six assists. Brendan Fisher added six points and Keegan Mehr tallied five for Brookville.
