BROOKVILLE — The Brookville girls basketball team stunned and defeated Waynesville last week even though the Spartans ended up with more points on the scoreboard at the end of the game.

How is that possible you may ask? The answer is Brookville played its best game against one of the top teams in the state and clearly the best girls basketball team in the SWBL Buckeye Division.

Waynesville was averaging 63 points per game overall and 69 points per game in the SWBL. However, Brookville held the powerful Spartans to a mere 33 points, their lowest output of the season.

The final score was 33-20 Waynesville. Brookville had the better of the game. The Spartans two leading scorers on the campaign, both averaging 11 points per game, were held to a combined six points.

Waynesville scored a buzzer beater to lead 7-6 after the first quarter and only had a three-point advantage at the half 16-13. Then an eight-nothing run in the third period sealed Brookville’s fate. Waynesville led 27-16 after three and the final of 33-20.

Brookville led the game in the second quarter of play for a short time. However, the more talented Spartans did manage to regain the lead.

The Spartans leading scorer on the season, Maggie Stephenson, was held to six points. Second leading scorer Katie Berry never scored a point. Tori See and Amelia Bunch each had seven points for Waynesville. Brookville held Waynesville to 19 percent shooting during the game including one of 17 from long distance.

Brookville meanwhile got eight points from Ashlee Haupt for game honors in scoring. Freshman Megan Luebke added seven. Freshman Alysaa Lackey tallied four and Jordyn Oliver scored one point. Brookville did not get points but the defense and tenacity displayed by Sara Carr, Abi Stanoikovich, Hunter Gardner, and Ellie Dafler were superb.

The Lady Devils, although outscored, did outplay a much more talented Waynesville team and felt they were the winners of the game despite to final score.
