WEST ALEXANDRIA — Preble Shawnee used a 25-5 second quarter to pull away from a determined Twin Valley South team for a 59-37 win on Friday, Jan. 19 on Hall of Fame Night at Twin Valley South.

On a night where 11 members of the Twin Valley community were honored for their athletic, academic, and service accomplishments, the host Panthers gave the state’s third-ranked Division III team a fight until the end.

“Credit to them. They came out and they didn’t back down,” Shawnee coach Jake Turner said of the South. “They came right at us and caused a lot of issues for us. You have to give them a lot of credit. I thought they played well. I thought our guys had maybe a little bit of a slow start then I felt like we figured it out and settled down a little bit and made some plays and got some stops.”

The Arrows led 14-9 after the opening quarter then closed the second quarter on an 18-3 run to take a 39-14 halftime lead.

Mason Shrout led the Arrows during the game-sealing with 12 straight points, including making a three-quarter court shot at the buzzer.

Shrout finished with 25 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Brayden Robinette added nine points, six assists and three steals. Brody Morton scored seven and grabbed five rebounds and Logan Hawley added six points and led the team with 10 rebounds.

“I thought some guys off the bench play some good minutes. Usually around this time we’re trying to shorten rotation. We’re trying to get it to maybe eight to nine.,” Turner said. “A couple of injuries still, guys battled through that, but we’ll figure it out.”

The Arrows shot just 39 percent from the field and were just 5-of-23 from three-point range.

“We got some guys right now that might be in a little bit of shooting slump but they’re going to figure it out,” Turner said. “These guys are staying in the gym. They’re going to get better, and shots are going to in.”

For South coach Braxston Campbell it was tough loss to take, but he was pleased with the way his team competed.

“We got a lot of respect for that program right there. They’re a good ball club and they can beat you in more than one way. But our kids fought, we battled,” he said. “We’ve been doing a lot more toughness stuff and getting after it in practice, making it harder. And I think it’s carrying over. Guys are playing harder and more physical. I was very pleased and I’m not one for moral victories, but our kids battled, and I need to give our kids more credit because we battled and I think Shawnee played the way they played because of how we defended.”

South was led by Trent Ray’s 10 points and 11 rebounds. Jandon Ankrom and Jace Thuma each added nine points.

Shawnee (13-1, 7-0 WOAC) was scheduled to travel to Fenwick on Tuesday, Jan. 23 They are scheduled to play at Ansonia on Friday, Jan. 26 and host Carlisle on Saturday.
