PCHS embarking on ‘Museum Tour ‘24’

EATON — Professional development often includes learning from others. What a better way to grow in the museum space than to visit other successful museums.

This year, the Preble County Historical Society is doing just that. PCHS is launching a brand new activity called the “Museum Tour in ‘24.” This tour will include visits to some of the most popular and incredible spaces around us. On Saturday, Jan. 20, we started the tour at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery in Dayton. And, after taking time to read, we noticed something really cool that connects Preble County to the Boonshoft Museum. Skeletal remains from a mastodon found in New Paris. Cool, huh?

What is referred to now as the Randolph Mastodon is actually a combination of remains of two mastodon skeletons, one found in Randolph County, Indiana, and one in New Paris. The two skeletons, of comparable scale, were each discovered in the years prior to 1895. Thomas Pierson discovered one on the Ross Reed Farm near New Paris in September 1873.

We are excited to get out, visit and discover other connections to Preble County history. Our next Museum Tour stop is on President’s Day, Feb. 19, when we will visit the National Air Force Museum. We will meet there at 9 a.m. It’s free to visit and we encourage others to join us.
