Lady Devils shock Oakwood 47-29

BROOKVILLE — As the final minutes of the game ticked away the fans of Brookville became more and more giddy while the look on the faces of the bewildered Oakwood Lumber Jills continued to become more shocked by each passing second.

The reason was the Brookville Lady Devils played an exceptional game in stunning Oakwood 47-29 Saturday in the Devils Den. The victory gave Brookville a record of 8-10 overall and 4-6 in the SWBL Buckeye Division. Oakwood dropped to 11-8 and 8-4 respectively.

It was the defense of Brookville that confused the Jills the entire game. Brookville took total control in the third period as Oakwood scored only two points in the frame.

In the final frame Brookville stretched the lead by hitting free throws to pull away for the 18-point victory. The win was a turnaround of 39 points as Oakwood defeated Brookville by 21 points at The Pit in December.

Brookville played a three-quarter court zone press and switched between zone and man-to-man defense in the half court to reverse the trend of the first match-up between the squads.

Oakwood used a big second quarter to establish control and roll to that win. Saturday, Brookville started to take command in the second quarter winning by four points in the frame, then increasing the control by winning the third frame by nine and pulled away by making 13 free throws to win the final stanza by six points.

The score was 10-9 in favor of Oakwood after the first quarter. Ashley Bowden had six for Oakwood in the period. A basket by Caroline Roelle at the end of the quarter gave the Jills the lead.

Brookville got a three-point basket from Ashlee Haupt, a lay-in by Alysa Lackey, and four points from Megan Luebke, who made her first varsity start.

The halftime score was 21-18 Brookville. Free throws by Evelyn Conner kept Oakwood in the game. Brookville got baskets from Sara Carr, Abi Stanoikovich, and Alysa Lackey in the frame. The Lady Devils also got three-point hoops from Haupt and Jordyn Oliver.

The quarter started with Oliver hitting her three-pointer to give Brookville the lead 12-10. Brookville never trailed again. Haupt hit a trifecta from 26 feet to make the score 15-11. The Devils pulled away and ended the quarter as Abi Stanoikovich made a layup as the half ended 21-18 Brookville.

In the third frame Brookville slowly pulled away. Haupt had six points in the frame, Oliver and Lackey each had two and Hunter Gardner made a free throw. The score was 32-20 after three periods of play.

Oakwood tried to rally in the final stanza but Brookville was equal to the task. The Devils were very methodical, waiting for easy shots and forcing the Jills to foul.

Ashley Haupt made 10 of 13 charity shots, all in the final minutes to ensure the Brookville victory. Gardner scored three points and Luebke one. The final score was 47-29.

The victory was the Lady Devils first over Oakwood in nine years and 13 days. Previously Brookville had defeated Oakwood 34-30 on January 15, 2015.

Scoring for Oakwood shows Bowden with 11, and Roelle and Connor with eight each.

Brookville points show Ashlee Haupt with 23 points; Alyssa Lackey six; Megan Luebke and Jordyn Oliver five each. Hunter Gardner added four points. Sara Carr and Abi Stanoikovich each scored two points.
