Valley View, Franklin hold off Lady Devils

BROOKVILLE — The Brookville Lady Devils fought gallantly but came up short against both Valley View and Franklin last week. The scores were 47-37 Valley View and 42-39 in favor of Franklin. The losses drop Brookville to a record of 8-12 overall and 4-7 in the Buckeye Division of the SWBL.

The story in the Valley View was a quick start by the Spartans on Senior Night in Germantown. Valley View jumped out to a 19-3 lead late in the first quarter and then held off a comeback attempt by Brookville. Brookville scored the final five points of the first quarter to trail be only 11 heading into the second period of play at 19-8.

Brookville then won the next two periods by three and two points respectively to close to within six heading into the final frame. The halftime score was 25-17 and 34-28 entering the final period.

The Lady Devils got to within four points a couple of times in the final quarter before the Spartans put the game away with free throw accuracy in the last eight minutes of the game. The Spartans connected on nine of eleven charity shots in the final stanza.

Brookville’s Ashlee Haupt led all scorers with 19 points including four three-point shots.

Valley View scoring shows Abi Jennings with 16; Ella Ferguson 14; and Reese Riley added eight markers.

Brookville made 12 of 45 shots for 26.7 percent. That includes 25 percent shooting behind the three-point line. The Lady Devils made six of ten free throws.

Individual Lady Devils stats show Haupt with 19 points and two steals. Alysaa Lackey had eight points. Megan Luebke scored five points and grabbed three rebounds. Sara Carr scored four points and snagged six rebounds. Abi Stanoikovich grabbed five rebounds and scored one point. Jordyn Oliver grabbed four rebounds and Hunter Gardner added three assists.

Brookville hosted Franklin on Saturday and got off to a good start but soon saw Franklin battle back and take the lead. The Wildcats then managed to hang on throughout the rest of the game despite Brookville battling hard. The key quarter was the second frame where Brookville only scored four points. The Wildcats scored eight in the period.

Brookville started fast and took a 10-4 early lead. However, the Wildcats began to find the range and edged ahead 14-13 after the first period. Ashlee Haupt scored 11 points in the quarter on a pair of long-distance shots and five charity shots. Sara Carr added the other Brookville basket. Kensie Black led Franklin with seven points.

Black added five markers in the second period for the Cats while Brookville managed only a pair of baskets. One from Haupt and the other from Luebke. The score was 22-17 Franklin at the intermission.

The Third quarter was Brookville’s best of the night. The Lady Devils outscored Franklin 9-6 and trailed by only two markers heading into the final frame. Haupt led Brookville with five points and Hunter Gardner added four points.

In the final quarter Brookville tied the game at 28, but Franklin immediately pulled back in front. The Cats built the advantage to as many as seven several times. However, the plucky Lady Devils battled and cut the margin down to three several times.

With just over a minute to go Black drained a three to give Franklin the lead by eight points. Brookville did manage to get within three as the final buzzer sounded. Haupt drained a pair of three-point shots and Luebke scored seven in the quarter for the Lady Devils.

The final score was 42-39 Franklin. The Wildcats were led by Black with 19 points. Olivia Truesdell added 11 points.

Brookville scoring shows Haupt with 24 points. That included five three-point baskets. Megan Luebke scored nine, Hunter Gardner four, and Sara Carr two points.

Brookville will close out the regular season on Saturday at Madison. Brookvillesports.com will broadcast the game.
